Regarding Statues

Is there any way currently to Make your dwarfs produce statues of certain people/events?

Not in vanilla, though Toady does plan on implementing it in the future.

Nope. It's all random.

Make more statues, and choose the good ones. (Well, it's only roleplaying: the dwarves don't really care about what the statue is about, with the possible exception of vermin)

Considering that dwarfs admire statues of vermin they despise i'd say there's probably _not_ an exception for vermin:
Ineth Brassbridges absolutely detests cave spiders.
Exceptional dolomite statue: "The item is an exceptionally designed image of Ineth Brassbridges the dwarf and cave spiders in dolomite. Ineth Brassbridges is surrounded by the cave spiders."

Built the statue, assigned it personally to her, and the thought is: "I was near to my own arranged statue. I'm very pleased."
"She feels pleasure near her own very fine tastefully arranged statue."

Who knows? Maybe the near coming temple/tavern release hype lured him back in to posting? I for one am filled with anticipation for the incoming rain of unexpected "features".
Though the ability to dictate the outcome of workshop jobs will come much later, with some workshop overhaul perhaps?

Do surroundings or mason's thoughts have any effect on the statues produced? If for example the workshop (loaded with a quantum stockpile of rock) was in a locked down area full of cats, would the dwarf start producing statues of cats? Or cats, cheese and booze, since there has to be a food stockpile in there too.

I have more than once been regaled of stories of masons making sculptures of people they dislike being wounded, and-or, making ironic engravings showing scenes of humiliation for people they dislike.

Say the mayor is afraid of purring maggots; Said engraver who hates the mayor may have an increased tendency to make engravings of the mayor surrounded by them, making plaintive gestures.

This is all anecdotal though.  No hard answers. I'd suggest DaVinci or Quietust for hard answers.

IIRC, whether and how much a dwarf is pleased by admiring artwork is determined by the value of the artwork, but this is subjective according to how the dwarf perceives it. The "perceived" value of an object can be raised or lowered if the dwarf likes or dislikes the subject of the artwork. So a dwarf can still be pleased by a statue of something they hate (e.g Cave Spiders) if the statue is good enough, but they won't receive as strong a thought about it as someone who doesn't care about or even likes Cave Spiders. They receive similar modifiers w/rt furniture, weapons, and caged animals that they like.

Ahh caged creatures.

In previous versions, I did so love to put caged, hated creatures in irritating noble's quarters.

"OH, what's that Urist McMayor who slaughtered 5 legendary metal smiths because you didnt get your crossbow bolts? You dont like kobolds? WELL THEN! Have these WONDERFUL masterwork cages with them tucked inside, placed in every room you own! Everywhere you go, there will be a kobold waiting!  Isn't that wonderful!?"

These days, the risks of them developing a psychosis is just too high though.

Value modifiers may be worth exploring, but that wouldn't be trivial to do. Ineth admired her own "very fine" statue, depicting herself and her hated vermin. The double-featuring could foul up modifiers (if there are any), but "very fine" is the one-better admiration grade, above "fine"; exceptional dolomite statues have a nominal value of 250☼; other "very fine" thoughts came from cloth bags rated 100-150, "splendid" thoughts from ropes rated at 300+. If there is a modifier, it can't be very significant.

At least i hope we can establish the knowledge that statues don't cause unhappy thoughts.
