Steel anvils and steel bars
« on: January 27, 2015, 03:27:36 am »

If you request steel bars from the mountainhome, the price could be very high. I've seen caravan sold steel bars at a price of more than 300. But steel anvils are relatively cheaper, they have a fixed price of 300 if you don't make extra request. So I always buy all the steel bars and anvils.

But if I remember correctly, you need 3 bars to make an anvil. So anvil is literally cheaper than its materials, am I correct?

That would seem to be the case, but how many bars does a melted down anvil give?

Melting an anvil only produces 1 steel bar.

Yeah, 1 bars. But still it is cheaper than bars. And a dwarven caravan usually brought many anvils.

Was it the leggings or greaves that produce more metal bars when melted?
Was this feature fixed already?

I don't think so. At least when I checked a few versions back it was still available.

If you are trying to buy things off the caravans I do not suggest that you worry too much about the prices, things without quality levels are incredibly cheap. Selling them clothing, crafts, food, corkscrews etc. will make it very easy to afford bars anvils etc. the inflated prices are well worth it considering how easy it is to produce wealth.

Well actually I do no worry too much.
The caravan always bring 11 steel anvils. Which means I get around 20 steel bars at a price of 300ish, every year. Not mention those steel weapons and armors, they can be expensive but not impossible.

Steel leggings, I believe, can be used to manufacture steel by melting. I used to do that when I was first learning the game, but it is a cheap strategy and I would like to see it patched out. For now, though, if you are struggling for steel, you can use it until you find better aources.

This year the caravan brought 19 steel anvils but only 4 steel bars, even though I requested steel bars.
I think maybe that's because I bought all their anvils.

Yeah, I've noticed that if you seem to buy certain things from caravans consistantly they seem to bring it more. Generally in fortresses with no cheese production I buy lots of cheese to diversify food (I know there's no real beneift to this, I just find it fun) and as a symbol of status since it's the most expensive food. Then next year they bring more cheese then before until they eventually bring huge amounts of cheese each year without me requesting it.

I've found the same thing with booze. I always madly buy up all the alcohol the caravan brings, and then next year, it always seems to have a higher proportion of alcohol. I think there's a link, but I always assumed it was an imaginary link. Evidently there must be a link, if other people are noticing it.

They also brought more if you are running low of something.
So it is hard to tell which is the cause, maybe I melt all the anvils every year.

Well in that case you'd be the same level of low on anvils meaning they'd never send more than the last caravan because you always have zero. Unless you found a way to get negative anvils.

Does it work for everything?  I thought the running low thing was only for certain things like consumables like food,  drink,  and wood.
