Stressed axe lord
« on: January 26, 2015, 09:15:37 pm »

He's a legendary+5 axedorf. I checked his relationship list, he has no friends, yet. And now his stress level has reached 142k.

Suggestions? Should I retire him for a while to let him make some friends or should I let him spar with others, which I guess can give him some happy thoughts.

He is amazingly agile, incredibly tough, mighty, very slow to tire and rarely sick.

He has a stunning feel for spatial relationships, unbreakable focus, an unbreakable will, a great kinesthetic sense, a sum of patience and good intuition.

I'd recommend giving him a nice bedroom and getting a really nice dining hall. When he stands around in the dining hall he'll see all the nice chairs and be happy, and when he sleeps he'll be happy about a nice bedroom. Potentially give him some easy job like smoothing a few walls to get the satisfied at work thought (also train kinesthetic and spatial sense).

Is 150k high enough to cause problems?
I let him fight another battle and he's more stressed now.

Will retire him as soon as possible and let him smooth the great hall.
Thanks for the tips.

I actually have no idea what any of those stress numbers mean. Back in the old system 150k was enough to make any dwarf explode into insanity, and I'd guess it's quite high in this system, but he hasn't gone insane yet so I don't know.

Well now some buzzards came. More vengeful thoughts. More stressed dorfs.
The axe lord now has over 174k stress points.

what are the thoughts he's getting that are stressing him? If it's horrified of death, they seem to get that thought by just seeing corpses. Is your refuse pile full of corpses and body parts? Try turning off refuse hauling on him if so.

Yeah, he's a soldier so he saw corpses, a lot. I already atom-smashed the corpses, but the stress seemed to last for months.

It seems the worst are vengeful thoughts caused by buzzards. Those toughts seemed to spread all over the fort.
Now there are four stressed dorfs. The ex-axelord's stress level has reached 260k.
He threw a tantrum, broke some furnitures and went back to work.

So now we know that 260,000 stress is a dangerous level and we want to avoid that. That's good progress. If the worst are buzzards then relaxing in a dining hall should hopefully keep him away from buzzards. The rest of the fort though... is your fort underground? Does it have doors? It seems a bit strange that buzzards would be a significant problem in an underground fort. If they are though, maybe try making a hunter? If hunters don't hunt buzzards then you'd have to make a marksdwarf squad which I have never gotten to work which is why I suggested hunters first.

Well he has already suck into depression. Maybe I should wall him off now just in case.

For some reason the job screen shows he's just doing his jobs, like pickup equipments, drink, eat, sleep... But he can't actually move. Unless I use dfhack to deleport him, he will just sit there.

Problem is, it seems dorfs will feel vengeful even when they spot the buzzards. Lots of interrupted jobs. So killing them may not a good option.

New development:

He's oblivious to reality.

Burrow him off in a very nice part of your fort.

Invest in a mist generator, maybe.

It's sad to lose legendary dwarves and especially legendary warriors.

He's not haggard anymore. Maybe there's still hope.
Maybe I should ignore next goblin siege and lock the front door, and use the happiest dorfs to bury corpses.

By the way, I still don't know if it was a bug or feature. Are haggard dorfs supposed to be stuck in their jobs? Maybe if I didn't use dfhack, he could have already died from dehydration.

DF2014's dwarves need to be a little less prone to stress and then it will be fine.

"He was horrified when seeing a troll die. He was horrified when seeing the goblin Stozu Hatepants die. He was horrified when seeing the goblin Dostgnosp Evildemon die."

You didn't see him get dismembered, you just saw his rotting corpse.

Not to mention the feeling vengeful all the damn time and stressing them.

Seriously, emo fortress 2014 ? I'm glad of the other updates (well, breeding by touch is meh, but I'm fine with it) but the emotions need a few fixes.

Damn, dwarves have respect for martial prowess and a neutrality towards war and peace, why are they so horrified by the consequences of war ? I would get it if they had particularly high empathy, and positive PEACE values...

Yeah, I can understand it is quite disturbing to see corpses.
But maybe seeing 10 corpses is not much worse than seeing 5 corpses at one time.

Give him a sabbatical?  Revert him back to a normal citizen without labours, and let him idle around for a while to admire your tasteful engravings of dead goblins until the stress dies down.

And aye, I'm a very good employer.

Reverting him to a citizen with no jobs will actually give him a bad thought. Better to give him a simple job like engraving as was suggested earlier. He'll get a good thought from it and if you give him enough work, he'll stay away from the outside and those pesky buzzards.

Speaking of stress though, has anyone had weird issues with rain causing too much stress? I have two dwarves that are slowly spiralling toward a breakdown and the only bad thought they have is they were recently caught in the rain. One, the fisher dwarf, has followed my expedition leader around for a year and cried on him and yelled at him about nine times each. And the stress keeps climbing higher even after ensuring she had a nice dry place to fish. Nothing in her personality accounts for this single nevative thought out doing every other good thought she has. (On 40.24, for ref)
