Archery Ranges

Great feeling when the stars align and your dwarfs actually use them.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Setup: I have each target expanded to the same area, assigned to the same squad for training, and set to shoot top to bottom.  I also have the squad assigned to train at the armor stand in the gif.  Default training settings.  No bolts hunter, 500 bolts for this one (and only) squad, all wood bolts for both combat and training.  Equipped with backpack, waterskin, quiver, copper crossbow, steel shield.

Note: If I had to build the ranges again, I'd leave gaps for arrows to actually pass the targets and fall down the channel behind.

You can still do that. Just remove four of the targets. It'll just mean that you have 4 dwarves training their melee skills. Also you should increase the width of the trench by 2 or 4 tiles, so it extends past the edge of the target line.

Can haulers/militia training be hit by flying training bolts?  I've never seen an instance of friendly crossbow fire, but, then again, I rarely have used Marksdwarfs.

Friendly fire is impossible, and will remain so until the military overhaul, AFAIK

Indeed, so you could have your archers shooting right through your dining hall if you wanted with no ill effects, but several amusing mental images...

There was a small mod that did exactly that. It was fun for a single battle, but the dwarves not being programmed to avoid friendly fire meant that the fun was pretty short-lived.
Like in total war, when your whole calvalry empals itself on a single pike.

Tables are no longer needed to eat on, they're needed for barricades to hide behind.
