Feature? Suicidal Dwarfs!
« on: January 26, 2015, 10:02:06 am »

So, guys. My fort is crumbling. It's under a necromancer's siege and because of a single not-built window some undead managed to get in and many more to shoot arrows into my dwarfs. Now, most of my dwarves are "horrified after being attacked by the dead" or stuff like that. But there's something more to it.

Most of my dwarves are vengeful.

And well, I've noticed something quite interesting: Even after many dwarves died and I put then outta there some of them went to that spot. And jumped down there. It happens quite fast so I couldn't see if any of them were actively seeking to attack any undead. But one thing I've seen:
No one of then had the blue exclamation of fear. when fighting then. No one entered the

So, what do you think, guys? Was it just some stupid AI? Is it possible that they jumped 1 z-level to a bunch of undead to haul something from outside? Or did they really meant it when they said "I'll take my revenge"?

I've watched "Vengeful" children get frightened by bears then chase down and beat them until they were torn limb from limb. I think when a dwarf gets it in their head that they want a fight they go all out.

Now I'm not sure anymore. One of my stonecrafters jumped there, but he was trying to recover the corpes of his fallen friend. By the way I just lost 10 dwarves that jumped over.

Yet, they are actively making the first move against the goblins, according to the reports. There's this Woodcrafter, for example, who was almost hit by a single arrow. After shouting about being terrified for a while he got up and tried to strike a goblin spearman before being struck down by other goblins. Really curious.

By the way, is tantrum turned off? I'm pretty sure that after losing 20+ dwarves in a short while they should all be raging (almost as I am) but they're all fine. Since when dwarves became such psichopaths?

Dwarves tend to be pretty chill in the short term. Tantrums seem have more to do with long term stress.

Wait, who got their limbs torn?  The bear or the children?  Because both seem as likely.

The children had the right to bear arms?  Or they armed bears?

Maybe they were barely armed.  :P

I had three vengeful Dwarves pummel an alligator with their bare hands for over a month before the poor thing finally died. They didn't eat, drink and only slept by falling unconscious every so often. They had one not so vengeful peasant bringing them water from time to time.
Funny thing was watching the other alligators in the area approach carefully then run away. Presumably terrified at witnessing the pure fury of a vengeful Dwarf.

I had a similar event with a bat which had injured a child. After watching in fascination every now and again for a month, I drafted and sent in a miner with a pick. He killed the bat with one blow, and everyone went for food and drink. One of the vengeful dorfs was a doctor, who, after a drink, went and buried the child who had bled to death in the clinic.

Everything was well until gangs of buzzards came.
I don't know why everyone became vengeful, the buzzards didn't even touch a pin.

Yep, more often than not I'm not even sure what they're vengeful about.
By the way, if two dwarves have a grudge with each other can they fight and one feel vengeful for another? or is that possible that they feel vengeful for a pet fighting?
