I must admit that I do like being able to yell "To Wikipedia!" every time I strike something new and unfamiliar.

We won't be getting the old ones back. It's fairly certain by now that Toady has a geology fetish.

You know all those new ores and flux stones? He coded that with one hand...

I'm just ignoring it all. A whatever opal? Great, an opal.

We've struck microlite you said? Is it an economic stone/ore?

No? Why would I care then, it's only stone!

etc.

So if dwarfs can see stones and ores and know their full name? How would it sound if an elf saw a twig on the ground.
YOU HAVE DISCOVERD A Casuarina equisetifolia TWIG!

No, it would say: "YOU HAVE DISCOVERED A HORSETAIL TREE (or iron wood, or other name for the same tree) TWIG!", because Toady avoids real life references or languages, thus not the Latin name, also Toady can spell.

But the general principle holds, I would be very disappointed if elven forest retreat mode does not differ AT LEAST 250 different kinds of trees, adding to that hundreds of other plants and similar things.

Dwarves have hundreds of different words for rock. Elves have hundreds of different words for trees. Yetis have hundreds of different words for glacial ice. Who's the wiser?

This is a fox skull helmet. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It menaces with spikes of fox bone and is encircled with bands of fox leather. This item is haunted by the ghost of Alfador Angrorung the fox.

I get bothered by the repetitiveness of it at times.  I seem to get an alert whenever I strike a new vein or cluster of something even if I found another vein or cluster of the same stuff earlier.  That's fine for the gems and metal ores.  But when I strike alunite for the 4th time and it pauses and centers my screen there, and I have multiple z levels of quartzite for white stone anyway, it kinda ticks me off.

Because it's dwarves, damnit!

Myself, I categorize by colour. Grey stones, light grey stones, white stones, red stones, blue stones, yellow stones. Pretty colours! I make floors and stuff out of them.
