Urist McHandless cancels Report Crime: Too injured
« on: January 25, 2015, 09:36:33 am »

See title. I have two veterans with missing hands and/or motor nerve destruction in their arms. As a result, neither of them can [GRASP] anymore. Anyway, a craftsdwarf threw a particularly violent tantrum, performing such heinous crimes as punching a turkey and shooting a hauler. He got his head pulped by a passing macedwarf for it, but now I'm stuck with two highly honoured veterans spamming endless "cancels report crime" messages. Has anyone else had this problem and resolved it? Preferably *without* the application of magma/starvation/murder in general - these guys are very popular around the fort still useful as wrestlers.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: I tried removing the captain of the guard from his position, and the spam stopped, but the moment I reassigned him, the spam began again.

I was posting in the other topic, bro! Anyway, let me rewrite it:

First, how did you get two army veteran lose their hands to a craftsdwarf? Didn't you assign them armor and weapons?
Anyway, if they are "too injured" they should be treated in a hospital. Do you have an hospital? If not this is the moment to start one.

By the way, what version are you using? Since the last update I didn't had any tantrum spirals. The new emotional system seems a lot more easier to handle than the old one. I miss the small raging things.

They lost their hands some time in the past, and the wounds have healed. They witnessed a crime, and thus the spam. The handless thing isn't directly related to the crime.

Side note: If you want upset dwarves, make the refuse stockpile in the hallways.

This. They lost their hands by being in the frontline in a zerg rush against an undead siege. They are fully healed, as far as possible, but nerve damage and amputation are permanent. They seem to need the ability to use their hands to report crimes.

I'm using 40.24, and I haven't had any proper tantrum spirals either - just 3 dwarves who are particularly susceptible to stress. Two are dead, one is now my baroness :/

I have convicted the deceased craftsdwarf of his crimes, but they still want to report him.

Lol. My entire fort is my military: on arrival, "civilians" get given crossbows and whatever armour and weapons are left over from the real military dwarves. These guys have seen the horrors of combat firsthand, no puny stockpile can scare them! TBH I'm amazed my entire fort isn't in a state of gibbering madness from all the undead-fighting.

HAVE YOU TRIED GETTING EVERYONE'S FEARS INTO THE FORT?
But seriously, I'm not great at keeping people happy, and I haven't seen a single stressed dwarf yet.

I'm still amused by the fact that hands are required for adequate crime reporting. I guess there must be forms they have to fill out? Or they need to sign something in person?

Dwarven Law is very clear on this regard: in order for a dwarf to accuse another, he has to point at him with his hand, otherwise no accusation will take place. It is a symbolic but very important procedure for dwarves.

That's how I imagine it at least

"please excuse me while I collect my hand from my coffin..." Burial of body parts before death was amusing BEFORE this was a possibility. Now it's downright hilarious.

Enter a dorf holding mummified hand in his mouth, and swinging his head around to point the mummified fingers.
Officer: "I'm sorry, Urist, stop mumbling, and tell me what you're trying to say?"

I always turn off job cancellations messages. "Interrupted by Giant Cave Spider"? Please, who cares!

But seriously, maybe that helps. You get used to it.

No, no, this is the answer to "do dwarves read?" Of course they don't; they just need their hands to operate their telepathic beards. Once they lose their hands, they can't send messages - only receive them! :P

They seem to need the ability to use their hands to report crimes.

Now we see.  Dwarves are actually Italian.  It all makes sense!

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

Why can't we make prosthetics yet?  Dwarven hooks/claws, dwarven arrow-hands, dwarven mace-legs.

And then there would be the inevitable science of safely amuptating all of a dwarf's limbs and replacing them with prosthetic weapons and making him an insane wrestler.  An entire squad of wrestler dwarves with hooks and claws and blades for limbs.

There's already crutch clobbering. A lead crutch is a very nasty bludgeoning weapon.
