Are dwarf emotions affected by the subjects of art?
« on: January 25, 2015, 08:58:12 am »

My mayor detests mosquitos.

One of my masons made a statue of him surrounded by mosquitos.  (He looks terrified).

If I put this in a public place, will it give him (or, indeed, anyone else who doesn't like mozzies) bad thoughts?

Engraved on the floor is a well-designed image of a kobold and a carp.  The kobold is making a plaintive gesture.  The carp is laughing.

I don't think soo. It might give him some sort of good thought, actually. Like when you admire something because of how fearsome it. But probably he will only be pleased near it.

Just like how they don't mind seeing statues/engravings of dwarves being struck down by elephants and that kind of thing.
Give it a try and tell us what happened!

I thought I'd heard that the opposite was true.  Maybe that's just for engravings, or no longer in the game?  Now, I know if it's just Urist McRandom Guy From the Past getting struck down by the evil murder elephant, no one cares.  But I'd heard that if Urist hates (vermin) and you put artwork of it in his chambers, etc., it causes unhappy thoughts.

I thought they were likely to be unhappy if they saw the thing they didn't like, or a statue or engraving of the thing they didn't like. Generally I put "surrounded by and terrified" statues in tombs, because I figure they'll work like gargoyles.

Yeaaah, pretty sure you don't want that where he's going to see it. I had a mason once that had a grudge against damn near the entire fort. I had no idea at time, but he kept making statues of everyone and the one thing they hated. That and he loved spiders so I had a lot of spider statues too.

Make a room with nothing more than this statue. When he makes a demand that gets you particularly angry throw he inside!

Dwarfs don't get thoughts based on art subjects and never did.

A mosquito-hating dwarf seeing a statue of mosquitoes gets a happy thought from seeing a fine statue. That's how it is, that's how it was. It's possible that they get a _weaker_ happy thought (almost impossible to verify without executable-reading), but the overall thought is happy because the thing they looked at was a piece of furniture.

Unhappy thoughts from looking at pictures of hated vermin are just an annoyingly persistent false rumour that thrives on the fact that DF players are allergic to doing basic research :P

PS: sorry for the snide aside in the end, i had just looked at some of the older computing threads and there were quite a few that were all speculation, untested designs entirely based on false assumptions that could have been dispelled by building a single plate-linked door. False rumours about the huge mess that is dwarf thoughts are small fishes by comparison. I'll try to behave a bit better in the future.
