Question Regarding Urist and Spears
« on: January 24, 2015, 07:21:05 pm »

I have a question regarding Urist McDwarf and spears... If I built a moat (nevermind the amount of z-levels) that had spear traps on the bottom of it, and there were enemies down there that castrated themselves on the bastards... Would Urist damage himself from empty spear traps (or even... occupied traps) while he was collecting the dead and/or their materials? Or, would Urist McDwarf become Urist McStupidTwit?

Let me know, for I don't really have that much experience regarding traps and spears.

So long as the spears are not retracting/extending and he doesn't somehow fall onto them he should be fine.

I'm assuming you are talking about upright spear traps.

There's no need to worry about your dwarves walking through upright spears, they will not harm themselves unless they fall into it.

In fact, I generally have an entrance to the fortress filled with those things. Connecting the spear traps to a lever and waiting for a Goblin or a werebeast to be on the spikes and repeatedly impale them. Just be careful your dwarves don't walk into it when it's stabbing.

The greatest danger of upright spikes for my dwarfs if my forgetfulness. I usually link my upright Spears/Spikes to a lever, and when enemies are around, I set the lever to repeated pulling. Then I open the gates to kill whatever is left, and see my own soldiers and dogs being killed by the upright spikes, because I forgot to stop the pulling of the lever.

If you did not connect the spikes, or never issued the lever to be pulled, you should be safe.

I guess if the only access to that moat would be by climbing its walls, dwarves that are trying to get items from below may impale themselves when they don't manage to climb successfully and fall (back) down. Better give them some safe way to the bottom; just going through traps (if it is not activated upright spear one) won't harm them.

Dwarves may safely path through non-firing traps of all kinds under their own power.

If the trap is firing when the dwarf passes through its tile, or if anything causes the dwarf to lose control of its pathing; i.e., combat throws, dodging, falling, fluid flow, knockback, etc., then he may take damage.

Guarantee that your dwarfs have a safe path to and through the traps, with nothing to interfere with them, and they will be perfectly safe wading through a field of buzzsaws, cages, giant axes, spears, spikes, or whatever other standard traps you might have constructed.
