Author Topic: DF0.40.24 Interested in fortress/adventurer succession by PM? Beginners welcome!  (Read 1862 times)

Heaven knows it's difficult recruiting enough people for a community game, and not everyone wants to have their progress (or otherwise) displayed on the forums. So I'm looking for one player who would be interested in playing a combined fortress/adventurer succession game. Progress reports can be by PM only (if preferred), and you don't need to write a 'wall of text' each time if you don't want to.

Further details to be discussed and agreed upon, although I would prefer to use Phoebus' Graphics Set.

Switching between pure vanilla and graphics pack should be straightforward enough. You wouldn't need to be inflicted with Phoebus' Graphics Set anywhere outside of screenshots. ;) Would you like to set up the world generation and initial embark? The one I use most now is my so-called 'Heroworld' embark. It's 129x129 with high (but not really really high) savagery, evil and megabeasts. I'm quite happy to try almost anything, though.

Actually, now that my winter break is almost over, I probably won't be able to devote the time for regular gameplay, sorry :(

But, what I was thinking was we start the world at year 10, enable humans as playable (along with dwarves of course; I think there is mod for just that), and then essentially fill the world's history with our own acts/fortresses/towns etc.

Supposing that we run a fortress/town for ~3-5 years before retiring it, we can fill 125 years of history with just 25-50 turns (which is a lot actually, but if its just two people, it should go rather quick).

And of course we have the occasional adventurer to spice things up. But it would be really cool, since most historical events would be done by our own hands Confiscated goods from a human caravan causing them to go to war? Well, you'll now have to worry about future forts warring with humans(or worse, human towns contending with dwarves!); Built a magnificent mountain-home worthy of the dwarf-king? Well too bad, I just built a better one, and he's moving :P; Dug too deep and left your fortress to the clowns? Well a heroic dwarven adventurer will clear that out for you, so you can reclaim. Since the world has been activated, the possibilities are truly endless

EDIT: The other benefit, at least, initially, are the loading and saving times (since there are few entities in the world)

So, you'd probably want a smaller world? Maybe 65x65 or even 33x33. If you could manage, say, one turn a week that would be OK for me.

Yup a smaller world sounds good. And I guess I could do a turn a week. (might need to skip a turn occasionally, but I think I can manage).

I've never actually done any sort of community game before, so I don't really know how this is supposed to work. Are you going to post the savefile somewhere? Also, I wouldn't mind if you went first (i'd prefer it actually).

DFFD is where save files go (usually). Traditionally players write up reports each turn in the community forum (i.e. here). If you're not keen on that, we can just use PMs or emails (as there would only be the two of us).

I'm fine with going first. If we're doing a joint Human / Dwarf civilization world then I presume you're thinking of one of us playing the dwarves and one of us playing the humans?

I wouldn't mind doing it on the forums, unless you'd prefer otherwise. As for the race, I was actually thinking we alternate (I don't necessarily want to limit myself to humans/dwarves only) or just play whatever race we feel like when we feel like it.

Have you got any mod in mind for making humans playable? I know of this one:
All Races Playable

The elves in that mod don't work very well, but the others should be fine.

That's the exact one I was thinking of as well. And we don't need to play elves anyway (I imagine it would be quite difficult building tree forts and the like (do elves even live in formal structures?) so it should work.

OK, so All Races Playable, 65x65 small region (or island?) starting at 10 years. I'll adapt my 'heroworld' settings for the smaller world and make sure all civilizations are there at the start. (You can't embark a fortress for a race if there is no civilization for it).

One thing I was thinking about was the family stuff. From my experience it seems that migrants come from other fortresses/sites if they exist, but if there aren't any other inhabited fortresses the appear out of thin area. That is all very well, but it doesn't give a good sense of history.

It is possible to get dwarves to marry in your player fortress. It isn't easy, though. If you want families to develop you might need to 'give them a push'. -> http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=147779.0  Maybe arrange one marriage per 20 dwarves per year and one marriage per 15 humans per year (because they don't live as long ... in theory).

Well, that's only if you're OK with the idea.

Have fun and if you get some news and screenshots of the state of your world, post them near. Strike the earth!

I have to admit that does sound pretty cool (we could have dynasties! I feel myself getting attached to families already...). I'm just a little hazy on how marriage works in vanilla (I know dwarves can't marry within a fortress, but can they court?), either way, I'm definitely on board with this idea.

Also this would work very well with nobles (since I imagine arranged marriages would be important for political reasons); and again, dynasties!

They _can_ get married within a fortress. I looked into it in some detail.
http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=147448.msg5944491

I only got one fortress marriage in the entire time, though, so it isn't at all common.

Anyway, we're OK for arranged marriages. We can look for dwarves who 'Dream of starting a family' and give them precedence. ;)

I think we're all set now? I can start a new thread tomorrow morning and generate the world and all that stuff then.
