Privateer - ASCII Sector: Rougelike in Space!
« on: September 15, 2007, 04:09:00 pm »

Privateer: Ascii Sector has been released to the public! This is a freeware game where you can fly around in the great big universe, doing missions and blowing crap up. Being the first release, it obviously isn't finished yet, and there isn't a plot to follow. It's still extremely fun, and you can do a lot.

And it's free, and in ASCII.

So Click Here and drop a line in the forums if you like what you see.

(And no, I didn't make this game)

Hmm...I was going to try to play and offer feedback, but after five minutes the game has crashed three times, so I'm feeling less inclined to keep at it. Any any case, here's what i came up with during those five minutes:

* It would bce nice if the game were more consistent about its "keyboard vs. mouse" interface. Either or would be fine, but having to go back and forth is awkward, and this starts right away: when you create a character you have to type your names, but then you have to go to the mouse to select gender, you can't use arrow keys and press enter. Once the game has started, you're using arrow keys for movement, and when you step into the spaceport you *have* to use the keyboard to choose whether or not to use the computer terminal. But if you do, then you *have* to use the mouse to scroll through the list. This constant back and forth is very awkward.

* Exiting the computer terminal at the spaceport crashes the game for me. Both, by pressing escape, and by clicking 'quit.' I'm running Dosbox under windows XP Home with Service Pack 2.

* Exiting the commodity exchange generates the same result

Actually, the game can be run completely from the keyboard (at least past the character creation screen)... and, erhm... it hasn't crashed for me since it left closed beta. There are a few bugs, but most of them are very minor. As Abhorsen said, try running it without DOSbox (I think it's been posted on the forums there that it occasionally causes problems)

And just in case I wasn't clear: I'm not the one who made this game.  :D

I hate to put down an ASCII game but if you want a remake of Privateer, this is the one to go for

Nvm, figured it out. And,sad enough, I like the ASCII one better. Now, if I could just figure out how to dock in the ASCII version....

Might want to spoiler that thing, but yeah, it sure is. And doing it with hand grenades is even funner, if you plan on bombing out the entire bar with three throws, leaving no witnesses.

Bump because this game is keeping me from getting real bored.

I cheated to start with 2 billion credits and got a lot of equipment to try what Worker just said.
I went to the refueling station in Halfway and threw a grenade in the bar. I wish I knew the results... I heard a guy scream from the explosion, but was immediately pepper sprayed by someone who attacked me. I am now completely blind in there. I was about to gain my vision back, but someone sprayed me again. :(

Otherwise, on my main character, I am doing quite well as a merchant. I'm still poor, but I'm actually gaining rep and the militia and confeds are friendly towards me! :D
