Caravan won't leave map
« on: January 23, 2015, 12:47:01 am »

Now they are hanging around in my stairwell.
What do I do?

Well it seems something happened in the mountainhome.
I checked the unit lists:

Thob Sacatmeng, diplomat
Tekkud Zasitatir, Merchant
Deler Identusung, outpost liaison
Nomal Istrathdodok, general

The problem has not been solved.
I order the squad to kill them, but failed miserably. The outpost liaison, a macedwarf, single-handedly killed all the starting seven. *facepalm*

Now I'm running the fort with 9 migrants.

I would have done nothing. Supposedly they would eventually go mad.

I assume it's only part of the caravan, as getting wagons down a stairwall should not be possible. I'd check paths, trees, etc.
I recently had a caravan where two guards got stuck on a corner that animal haulers had negotiated without a problem (the second one might have stepped on the shoes of the first one or something). They eventually were dislodged and left as I send some dorfs to the area for trap maintenance (a kobold had passed just in front of them and gotten killed in my anti sneaker trap).

They did headed down there, but I hadn't dug into cavern. And they didn't have wagons.
I suspect it was because the goblins conquered the mountainhome during their stay. That explains why a merchant became their general.

By the way, they left eventually and came back shortly after that(they had lingered for several months I guess).

This time a human caravan had the same problem. Some of them tried to leave from my stairwell, while the others refused to leave the trade depot.
How do I tell them there is NO CAVERN IN MY FORT?!

Before I could find a solution, a vile force of darkness arrived. The greenskins seemed confused by the humans, they killed a caravan guard then hesitated to enter my stairwell. A goblin swordman triggered a weapon trap and died. The others took over the hatch cover and began to kill humans in the stairwell, slowly. The humans were also unwilling to fight, despite they outnumbered the goblins.

Eventually I got bored and sent my squad to finish the goblins off. As soon as all the goblins died, the caravan from the mountainhome arrived. Now I have an overcrowded trade depot to deal with.

Edit*

1) I built floors outside this time so their wagons had a clear path.
2) This is a 1x1 map. Forgot to mention.

Bumping this because I'm having the same issue.

The dwarven caravan arrived, I traded with them, they gave me the departed on their journey message...
But they're still there. The wagons haven't moved from the depot, the pack animals and guards are milling about in the vicinity. (mostly due to some Keas picking fights with them)
One of the guards stood on a frozen pond all winter and then drowned when it thawed in spring. No one cared.
The elves arrived at the overcrowded depot, traded, and left no problem.
Then summer came and the human caravan arrived to trade, they will be leaving shortly.
I've checked and there is and always has been wagon wide paths to all 4 map edges. I've not raised the drawbridges or done anything to block off their path at any point.
The liaison came and went no problem, I've even had elven and human diplomats visit and leave while they've been sitting there.

Why won't they leave!?

What if you forbid the depot? Or destroy it?
Did they have broken wagons so they couldn't load all the goods in the depot?

By the way, when that happened, I "t" the trade depot and found all their un-packed goods were marked [T].

The humans left no problem.
I waited until almost winter when it became apparent I was not getting a new caravan or a liaison this year and deconstructed the depot.
This finally got them to leave. They were even kind enough to take all of the horse foal that were born during the year they spent in my depot. They do however seem to have left behind a bunch of stuff I never traded for.

When you deconstruct the depot you also "steal" the stuff in it, but I think that does not count as seizing from a diplomatic point of view.

It doesn't matter. Didn't make it off the map = you stole it. That's all that matters.

My human friends seemed perfectly fine with I killing them all. They sent another caravan next year as if nothing happened.

However when I killed some elves in another fort, their caravan didn't come next year, instead they sent an ambush. But their diplomat still came the year after, with a new caravan.

Maybe the difference is whether some of them leave the map alive?

I believe you are more likely to anger them if some survive to report back rather then all being wiped out.

Yes it makes sense.
Although it was an accident. I didn't expect my military all had bad cave adaption. And there seemed to be a bug(40.13 or so) they didn't attack right away. And the melee dorfs were poor armor users. So their short legs never caught those fleeing elves...

That's what you get for not locking them in with drawbridges first...
