Do daggers use melee skill or swords?

Anything that isn't a designated weapon uses melee skill in melee and ranged skill when throwing; so it just uses melee skill.

Update coming after I do my Eng exam (~three hours)

Garrick

You pick up the Copper Spear. You then check the room. [PRC] You don't find anything.
You then go to the door and listen for any movements. [ENV] [PRC] You hear something, though it sounds far off.

Barry

You [SPD] grab the Wooden Bow as the Zombie [SPD] is moving. You [SPD] immediately shoot [AIM] at the Zombie's foot. He [DDG] just gets his foot out of the way, but instead his ankle is hit! [DMG] His ankle bone is fractured, and he falls forward!

You take a breather, relieved that you hit. Suddenly, it starts crawling towards you! You quickly take the torch on the wall and start lighting an arrowtip with it.

Aoshi

You take the dagger, then check the door for traps. [PRC] There are no traps.
You peek through the door, then come out when you don't see anything.

You find yourself in an un-lit three-way fork. There's a short passage to your North, South, and West. South is a room, but you can't see anything much in the North or Western directions.

After a moment, you hear a zombie from your North-West and faint chatter from the room South of you.

Grigori

You pick up the Copper Hammer and smash the door open.
You find yourself in a long, unlit hallway. It extends past your sight in your West and the East side bends North.

There are multiple doors on the side of the hallway.

You hear a bit of noise to your North-East.

))Hm, decent start. When you say that I didn't find anything in the room I'm in, though, do you mean that I didn't even see a single piece of furniture? It shouldn't take a search check to know some basic details about the room I'm in. I don't even know what the door, walls or floor are made out of, but I have to assume wood and stone respectively. Ah, well.

Action: Since I sincerely doubt that anyone would make a trap for a door that only leads to an empty room, I slowly open the door as quietly as I can, just enough for me to pass through. I then stop, look beyond and listen for any sounds (or lack thereof), and should I hear nothing or the sounds are still far off, I cautiously step out of the room, spear at the ready.

You're right in your assumptions; other than that and the torch, there is absolutely nothing in the room. If there was furniture, I would list it as you enter.

Sneak one tile north and carefully peek behind the corner.
If I'm attacked then slash tendons from attacker's arms and withdraw to opposite side of the pillar in middle.

The Zombie's neck [DMG] is completely severed, and its right arm slumps before it can get any further. Three seconds later, the entire zombie vaporizes, and it no longer exists.

In its place lies 9 coins.
