Any MMOs you guys recommend?
« on: January 21, 2015, 05:24:32 pm »

I've been looking for one to actually play. Singleplayer RPGs keep my interested in a week and I want to actually socialize and see people in the world. Skyrim is pretty static as far as the economy and game goes. Having other players makes it a lot more dynamic even if I don't group. Even modded Skyrim, doesn't have the dynamic MMO to it.

I saw secret world when my friend played it, but I think he might be early in the game...it sounds like I'd spend a lot of money to end up regretting it later. Maybe when it goes on sale again it would be more worth it.

I looked at SWTOR and ESO, but I dunno. ESO is going buy to play anyway. I'd probably pay a month and stop playing in the same month.

I played ESO in beta (and I got a free week after release) and it didn't really hook me in beta or the week I played it. Inventory system sucked so much. Haven't played SWTOR in ages though (since beta) and I had more fun in beta than I did in ESO beta. I remember in ESO I kept going to the bank every 15-20 min and spending another 30 min organizing my inventory.

My favorite MMOs have been WoW, Tabula Rasa (this one was epic, very unique), City of Heroes (very unique), Asheron's Call (I wouldn't want to play an MMO like it again though) and I loved auto assault (up there with TR for me, very unique and epic). Those are the kinda MMOs I like.

I don't tend to have fun playing clones. If I want to play an MMO like WoW, I'll just play WoW...far more content and things to do. No point in playing a MMO that copies it with far less content than what WoW has available. Every time I play a WoW clone, I feel like playing WoW instead.

MMOs I didn't like: EVE, Age of Conan (only 1-20 was any good, tortage was epic), SWG (not a bad MMO, just not my type), Darkfall+Mortal Online and..
Didn't like GW2 either, too arcadey and gamey and the world I didn't like at all. Didn't like GW1. Saga of Ryzom is really unique, but you can't do anything by yourself or with one other person (I play with my best friend only, but game is too hard with only yourself or one other person...need 3+ people so that is out). That and the game is pretty abandoned and lack of updates. Didn't like EQ2 either, the graphics style SOE used made it age really badly.

I really like MMOs the best out of any genre, its just hard for me to find a good one. City of Heroes, Auto Assault, Tabula Rasa were all amazing because of how unique they were, but NCsoft kills all their MMOs

So pretty much I'm looking for an unique, immersive MMO without an arcadey gamey world (like GW2. WoW feels more like a living world even if it isn't really) that can't be found elsewhere.

From what I can tell, that is actually the secret world, maybe DC Universe (I don't want to play champions) and...can't think of much else that gives an unique experience. I'd go with secret world, but I'm afraid I'd run into disappointment later in the game and get bored or the games quality will be too low toward mid/end game. Since I didn't get it on sale, I'd spend a LOT of money. And it probably won't go on sale for a while. So I either pay a shit ton of money or I have to find another MMO that gives an unique experience. And I did like DC Universe, but its kinda old and I heard it was rather dead especially on the PC.

Other than those two, I can't seem to find an unique sorta modern MMO...doesn't matter if fantasy or sci-fi (though I don't tend to like space games)

Well, thanks for any help :)

I enjoyed DC Universe for the two weeks or so I played it, mostly for the fast-action combat and open world PvP (on the PvP server. There's also a PvE server). Its character customization, however, is quite sparse when compared to City of Heroes or even Champions Online.

I haven't played it so can't comment on its quality, but I was of the understanding that Secret World was a buy the box--no subscription needed sort of game? I've seen it going for around $7.50 on Steam during sales.

As for the other MMOs I've played, you stated you've played WoW and weren't interested in EVE and Planetside 2 is a FPS rather than RPG so I have nothing else to add.

Archeage was fun for a bit, if you like Uber grindy Korean MMO fare. It would've been better if not for the lack of support and influence Trion had over it. Updates were slow, and it didn't really have much going for it aside from the massively abused housing system, where you'd be lucky to get a small plot against the masses of unattended hackers.

I recently started EVE again, after a 5 year hiatus, and am finding it quite enjoyable with friends, and after gaining a bit more patience.

Aside from that, Everquest Landmark looks to be good, though it also looks like SOE is just being lazy on design; why build a fully functional game world when you can get hordes of players to do it for you? I'm pretty sure that there will be a base world, at least, but it feels like a bit of a cop out.

Other than that, I can't really  recommend any others, as most of the ones I've played are WoW clones or freemium money grabbers. And I burned out on WoW clones a few years ago after playing through Wrath to Cataclysm, to the point that I actively avoid MMOs in general these days.

I recommend swtor if you like soloing in mmos with nice dialogue and stuff. It's very not grindy, I got a one month sub and played for most of that. It was almost the second mmo I actually reached max level in and definitely worth it.

Lord of the Rings Online was also very good, but I don't know how good the f2p is because I played it when it was sub.

Oh and Pirates of the Burning Sea might interest you if it's still open.

If you want a living world but don't like EVE then there's not a whole lot out there for you, Everquest Next is probably your best bet but it's not coming out for a while yet.

I'm not sure exactly what the definition of living world is...but it kinda sounds like ArcheAge. AA is a heavily player-driven experience, with most of the world having open pvp. Players build structures and plant crops in the open world, and slowly carry heavy trade packs across long distances to be sold for resources and currency. Meanwhile other players choose piracy and attempt to steal packs from other players for a quick easy profit. Much of the fun in the game comes from finding friends to team up with, and joining guilds to work together. It's not uncommon to see dozens of people escorting trade wagons, only to assaulted by dozens of other players from a rival guild and have a huge battle erupt. Naval warfare is also big, with players investing resources into boats that can rapidly transport goods to distant continents for even greater profits, and pirates building galleys to attack the merchant ships.

ArcheAge certainly isn't for everyone, but you might enjoy it if my description sounds interesting to you.

If you don't mind a set of intensely anime design decisions, Mabinogi manages to stand out incredibly among free MMOs, in my opinion. In a particular way, that is.

Mabinogi is focused around non combat stuff. Combat is still a huge part of the game, and I'd say they weren't entirely successful, but you can still very definitely make a living off non combat things, although it would take a very grinding oriented individual to not take a break from life skills to kill things now and then.

Weapons require repairs, which have a non insignificant cost attached to them, if you go to an actually passable blacksmith, cheap blacksmiths will charge peanuts but run the risk of seriously wrecking your gear, similarly rare weapons that are more powerful will cost more to repair typically.

Combat is well and above the simple "click to attack, press keys to use spells" although it is not without it's flaws. Timing is helpful, thinking about what you do is moreso, and there are several skillsets that all offer different positives and negatives (There are clear top tier choices, so it's not the most well balanced system, but I'd say every skillset has at least SOMETHING that would draw you to it).

Skill system involves rebirthing and releveling to get AP, to funnel into skills to increase their effectiveness. Mabinogi is a very long burn game, and to boot, you'll never absolutely NEED a reset.

A plot that, again, while it is sort've odd with the character design decisions, mimics some aspects of celtic mythology, then goes on to do it's own (far more soap opera-ey) thing, after the first three story arcs. Plot is genuinely fairly interesting, and the first three gens were actually written by a guy that knew what he was doing, not an intern.

Community is.... the community of a free MMO with anime stylings. Lotta teens, lotta very internetty people. If you don't mind that, it's a nice enough place.

A semi player driven experience. Basic gear and items are easily found in NPC shops, more advanced items can be made or found in dungeons. It works better, in my opinion, then fully player driven stuff, where the games inevitably become an enormous monopoly that can't reasonably be fought against, unless you're willing to devote months to the cause, over the efforts of potentially several hundred people.

Overall, mabinogi is a flawed, very dated MMO, with a lot of interesting ideas that it executes reasonably well. The world design is fantastic, and even now with the semi disjointed new story arcs, I find myself enjoying the setting and concept. Bay12 had a guild once upon a time, and while I might attempt to revive it in the future with a combat overhaul that's coming, right now it's inactive, and incapable of accepting new users. If you join up, and want a buddy, join Alexina, and add Bariaus, you might catch me on.

Similarly if you want more info, feel free to message me, because I can't not gush about the game, and I don't want to clog up the thread with several walls of text. :P

Well, to me. It is hard to explain.

But, WoW felt like an actual world. NPCs wandered around (sorta, most stayed in the same place), but the world was full of life. It was static though...but it felt really immersive. Its hard to explain, even if it wasn't WoW and was just a random setting...it would still feel like an actual immersive world. It may be themepark, but it has a lot of...atmosphere? But even the NPCs as static as they were, felt like they were always part of the world.

On the other hand. Take EVE, its a huge universe. But does not feel like a living universe. Sure players go by and occupy. But lets take X3 Terran Conflict...it feels like an actual living universe. I liked X3 a lot more. But I don't like space games, so I never played it that long. I think because in EVE, its actually rather...static except maybe in sov null space. I know WoW is, but...eve felt...empty...hard to explain again. It was a lack of life, except for the other players and that didn't really help that much to make it not feel like that to me.

The worst offenders I played recently are GW1/GW2. GW2 being the worst. The world feels too arcadey, and while NPCs in the cities had their conversations...WoW actually has better NPCs imo. In GW2 NPCs repeated the same dialogue over and over and over. They were like repeating dummies. The world feels very unimmersive. The events are worse than doing stuff in WoW. Would I live in the world of GW2? NO, it would be like being in the twilight zone. WoW may be static, but it feels...not real...but far more immersive. WoW world doesn't feel arcadey or gamey. Hard to explain though. GW1 world was far better than GW2 though. It felt a lot more immersive, so maybe I shouldn't completely include it. GW1 world was a lot less arcadey and gamey feeling. But to me, it has nothing to do with sandbox/themepark...its hard to explain why it feels like that. Maybe you can get what I'm trying to say from what I wrote :P

As for mabinogi. It sounds amazing, but the community ruins it for me. It sounds like a 4chan-like community from what you said lol. Plus when I played I had a bunch of teen girls saying "u single" (that was a while ago though) and I was 23 at the time (so almost 3 years ago)...so I quit the game cause that was too disturbing lol. I don't want to be put on no pervert list lol.

Also, Ryzom and SWG are only sandbox games I played that had a very immersive world. Asheron's Call as well from a long time back. Most sandbox MMOs are rather devoid of life (and I don't consider other players to help much. Thats too gamey. I don't like MMOs or multiplayer games that make it 100% of the players. In the real world, there is tons of life everywhere with people or no people). Ryzom has a really immersive world, and SWG did too but I didn't get too into that one. Funny enough, mostly themepark worlds feel more immersive to me and like living worlds even if most are really static. Though, RIFT is a themepark that also has a bad world to me. Really gamey and arcadey. And, sandbox MMOs don't ever give me that feeling except rarely. Hard to explain like I said.

I probably don't know 100% the type of MMO I like. But I do know I had most fun in City of Heroes, Tabula Rasa, Auto Assault, WoW and 1-20 tortage for Age of conan. Those were my top favorite MMOs. Except AoC...that was only good for tortage for me lol.

All of them had amazing worlds (except AoC overall) and were a lot of fun to play and were really unique. I guess all of the above are more themepark, but they were all really immersive. Sandbox MMOs only Ryzom and sorta SWG were most immersive sandbox MMOs for me. But guess I like themepark mostly with a good story. I guess its also partly because sandbox MMOs rely far too much on players and PvP, and SWG/Ryzom put a lot of focus in PvE with a lot of life in their worlds. Games like Archeage, EVE, Darkfall are so empty and barren as far as life goes.

Wonder what would be a good MMO fit for the above then. Still seems like the secret world might work, but its so darn expensive and I missed the sale for it (well skipped it actually).

The recent MMOs that I haven't completely hated are Star Trek Online and Neverwinter, and of the two I prefer Star Trek Online (more options, more abilities to use, the quests aren't so formulaic - Neverwinter's quests are on par with Skyrim's in formulaicness).

I didn't care for LOTRO, but that was mostly because I had no control over attacking/blocking/dodging in combat. You do have that control in Neverwinter, to some degree in Star Trek Online, and in DC Universe Online, for instance (although I wouldn't recommend DCUO).

With SWTOR, when I tried it, before I could actually play, IIRC, I had issues with (a) registering (it took several hours to straighten it out because EA), (b) installing, (c) logging in (my login did not work in the client despite having worked on the website), (d) getting it to actually run at 1920x1080 instead of, like, 800x600 or something stupid like that, and (e) and getting it to not immediately CTD. Eventually I got it working and played for a few days on a few different classes before quitting because the free-to-play restrictions, and the problems with the client itself, were more irritating than the game was fun. The restrictions on free-to-play players felt pretty severe (and certainly didn't make me want to pay to get rid of them, they just got me to stop playing). I also noticed that they were doing the pay-for-expansion thing in addition to the you-need-subscription-to-not-be-gimped thing.

DC Universe Online is the same way with their expansions: You have to pay to get them and what they unlock (generally new classes/powers/whatever). You also have to pay if you want more than a non-trivial money cap, etc, and if you go over the tiny tiny money cap in DCUO, your money goes into an account which you cannot access normally, unless you throw station cash at them to get money out of it. I ended up repeatedly stopping because just managing your money is a huge hassle (turning in-game money into potions every 30 minutes because you're at the cap again, and that's not even considering what you'll do when you eventually need to buy something that costs more than you can possess).

Star Trek Online's free to play is much less restrictive than SWTOR, and all the story missions in all the expansions are available to everyone (the fancy ships are not, however, since they're in lockboxes which require keys to open, so...).

STO is ... weird, though. It's more combat focused than the shows, to the point that the Federation, or at least the way the game has you behave, is practically warmongeringly aggressive. Of course this seems normal for video games, but it's out of character for Star Trek. Also since you mentioned it bothered you, it does have the generic NPCs that stand around repeating the same two or three lines during missions, because they were programmed to do that in case you weren't looking at them the first time they said them, I guess?

Spoiler: More on STO (click to show/hide)

Elite: Dangerous might do it for you. The thing to keep in mind is that once you've learned to play, always play online. You've got 400 billion star systems you can jump to (though since it's still pretty new the vast, vast majority are still unsurveyed), a range of roles to play, and a world that responds dynamically to player action. The biggest sticking point would probably be the flight-centric nature of it; if you can't enjoy flying and can't manage to hack it at least as a mediocre pilot who can use mouse-and-keyboard well enough to dock and avoid pirates trying to interdict you out of warp, you'll probably have a hard time with it.

If you want a comparative description, it's EVE except:
1. Dogfighting instead of maths and clicking.
2. No players flying anything larger than a small freighter; most are in fighters.
3. Relatively minor emphasis on equipment, much higher focus on skill; a good pilot in the starter Sidewinder can do pretty well, and the Sidewinder is pretty much the best pure dogfighting playable ship in the game.
4. You can make a living off of doing nothing except scanning new systems and selling the data. It's perfectly possible (provided you've got a fuel scoop) to just keep flying forever, as long as you don't fry yourself getting too close to a star or something.
5. Trading is both engaging and interesting. The game has tools that let you track trade routes, supply and demand, price changes, &c. either by visiting stations or by buying trade data from other places. Even a short little two-jump run ferrying metals from a refinery-economy system to a developed system can be more interesting than active PvP in a lot of MMOs.
6. No reliance on corp bullshit to have fun at higher levels of play. The most you're likely to see will be 3-4 people flying together, usually bounty hunters and pirates.
7. It's fucking gorgeous. I seriously don't know how it manages to both look that good and run that smoothly.
8. Asteroid mining is engaging. Fuckin' seriously. They made it entertaining to set up station-keeping rotation and lateral movement relative to asteroids. They made it fun to chase down the chunks of ore that fly off into space and swear because you came in too fast, misaligned, and the stuff bounced off your hull instead of going into your cargo scoop. And then there's that crunch where you've got a refinery full of gold, are running to a station, and some asshole scans your cargo and makes a play for it.
9. Smuggling is a rush, too. Nothing like coming in to a Fed station carrying stolen cargo or illegal goods, running silent for the last kilometer, and praying that you manage to get to your landing pad before you fry in your own juices or are forced to go hot and risk the station scanning you.
10. Alongside the active, skill-based dogfighting combat (as opposed to nigh-universal clickfests), there's also the power management. It's pretty elegant, and nicely done in a way that is sort of reminiscent of traditional MMO skill rotations while being active and fluid rather than predictable "best" patterns. It's set up so that your reactor feeds three main things: Weapons, Engine, and Systems (namely, weapon recharge time, boost recharge time, and shield recharge time), letting you shift how much power is allocated to each on the fly, which good combat practically demands.

I guess that sort of turned into why E:D is amazing part of the way through.
--

That aside, re: GW2: Did you play much WvW? The PvE content is fucking dull and quickly turns into doing nothing but the world boss train, which is understandable given how fast it is to level toons to 80. WvW was always what kept me coming back, especially since my home server is in that 3rd-4th highest ranked position for NA (Sea of Sorrows), so there's pretty much always a group of 20+ running in teamspeak with another dozen or two randoms following the pringle. On weekends it gets up to 100+ for each world pretty much solid through most of the day, since we've got steady pops both in NA and SEA/AU/NZ.

It's really a different game entirely. The PvE content is shit. PvP is mostly shit. Get a couple toons to 80 (my advice would be a Warrior first, they're super easy and can do a lot of fun stuff in WvW), then run WvW and basically nothing else. If you're on a half-decent server it'll be one of the best PvP experiences you've had, I think, especially come tournament time; last spring we had pretty much a solid 500+ total people on WvW at any given time, between the three worlds for each stage, enough to split into multiple groups and coordinate effectively.

City of Heroes, Auto Assault, Tabula Rasa were all amazing because of how unique they were, but NCsoft kills all their MMOs

Man, all of this. Especially Auto Assault- I've finally found someone else who actually played it. :P I was really looking forward to Jumpgate: Evolution, it's too bad that died before it got released.

I actually met my long time best friend (online only though, he lives over in Europe and I'm in North America) in auto assault. We've been friends ever since! Not many people played it, but as far as I knew, the devs tried getting advertising and NCsoft refused and then canned them. Which is sad. They did the same to CoH, except CoH was actually making a profit but NCsoft killed them anyway. Then there is Tabula Rasa, which I'm not really sure whose at fault...pretty sure considering their track record its probably NCsoft. All three were the most unique MMOs I've personally played.

As for GW2, actually the main reason I'm not gonna play. I can't access the email used, because I used gmail phone verification (that was dumb as I have no access to my old phone and not enough info on my gmail to access it so I pretty much lost the email (I only made it for GW2)) and GW2 refuses to let me in until I activate the code they send to the email. Because I guess they said my account was hacked.

On top of that, I actually lost my GW2 account details after I moved after giving up trying to get to my gmail. Which I don't feel bothered enough to call NCsoft (or google for the email) and deal with that. I hate talking on the phone. Not like it matters, since I don't even remember what the username or password was. Further on top, I lost the cd key because I moved and had to throw tons of stuff out (ran out of time to pack even though I was packing for a month...so much stuff). So no cd key, no username, no password, no email. And I had the collector's edition, and I don't want to get a lackluster non-collector's edition as I had a bunch of in-game stuff.

So yeah, pretty much to sum it up...no GW2 ever again for me :P I didn't particularly enjoy it that much to spend hours getting my account back or buying it again :P

As for Elite. Funny that was mentioned, my best friend actually did the kickstarter for it and really likes it. Didn't really think of it even though he plays. I think it might partly because I hear its really unfinished, and I tend to wait till closer to when its finished before getting into it. It sounds good, but I'm not much of one to do early access stuff.

As for games, I think I'm gonna see if anyone can't give me a 3 day (or the better 30 day trial) for The Secret World. I did a lot of looking and reading, and that sounds like something worth seeing if I like as it sounds really good to me. Kinda like what I'm pretty much looking for right now.

An MMO without too much focus on combat. (sounds like Elite has a lot of non-combat stuff), a good storyline and an unique MMO. Since actually looking at the MMOs I've played...I only like the MMOs that are 100% unique. Asheron's Call (well it was one of the first), Auto Assault, Tabula Rasa, City of Heroes...and actually...Secret World is 100% unique, so its good chances I'll really like it. I really liked WoW too, which I guess wasn't entirely 100% unique...so sorta an exception. But it did do a lot of innovative stuff, even if it used stuff from previous MMOs (quite a few things were very similar to asheron's call 2, which they took a lot of influence from when it was closer to release. Especially the UI).

But not gonna buy Secret World till I actually try it. So hopefully someone has a trial lol. I asked on steam forums, so we'll see I guess.

(edit: Ended up getting a 3 day trial. So gonna give it a shot. Though I'll have to keep in mind the early game is probably better than later (from what I was told).
