Tiny Trek
« on: January 20, 2015, 02:54:52 pm »

I've just had this pop up on Steam, and it looks bloody awesome!

"From the creators of Vincere Totus Astrum comes a universe of exploration and adventure. As the Captain of your own Starship begin your trek of literally endless worlds by first selecting and editing your randomly generated race and ship, then set out for the stars.

Encounter alien races and exotic locations as you travel in an endlessly procedurally generated galaxy. No two game are the same. As you explore, randomly generated “Episodes” will have you fighting hostile ships, helping aliens and exploring the surface of new planets.

How long can you survive the deep of space? How far can you travel? Who knows what is waiting for you! Your trek begins now!"

Definitely my kind of game, and I'd certainly lay down £10.99 if I had it (bit of a heavy month for bills, unfortunately) - I figured plenty of other Bay12ers would be interested, too.

The price update has gone through, and it's now at £3.99 rather than £10.99 for early access. Should be reflected in other currencies, too.

Tried looking around for some response, but I have a feeling that the dev is sockpuppetting on indiedb and there are no reviews on steam.

Never heard the term "Sockpuppetting" what does it mean?

Creating alternate accounts to boost your own credibility.  Named after sock puppets instead of regular puppets because regular puppets imply you actually put some money/effort behind it; the simplest sock puppet is simply a sock over your hand.

So I decided to try it and wow, it is very unintuitive, hard to see what you need press to really do anything. I guess I would have to make the comparison of trying to learn dwarf fortress without the help menu or...really help at all. Not to mention buggy...even after playing for a bit and figuring out what to do, in the middle of the 2nd combat tutorial (a 2 vs 1 battle), my ship suddenly flies sideways and off the screen never to be seen again.

The art style looks...well let me put it this way. Blinding snow of Skyrim blinds my eyes and really hurts them (hence why I get environment overhauls to get rid of snow)

And the screenshots alone make my eyes hurt a lot. I dunno why, but I've seen other retro looking games and they are fine on my eyes in youtube videos and screenshots. But this game, just the screenshot alone makes my eyes really really sore.

OK, yeah, looking at the screenshots, I agree with you. The graphics are the sort I remember from my old Commodore 64/128. 8-bit art is fine, this just gets too pixelated for my liking.

The idea is nice, but I think the UI and the graphics need more work before I'll put my coins on the table.

My C64/128 didn't have annoying visible black lines across the display. :V

It's definitely rough around the edges, but it's showing quite a bit of promise in terms of gameplay.

Also, you can turn the scanlines off - I found that option pretty quickly, as they began to annoy me too!

If people are going to do a retro style art, they should at least keep it consistently retro. I don't think you should be using semi-translucent alpha-blended particles in a game which has visible scan lines in it :-\

As I said above, you can change it in the options and thus it's a bit of a non-issue.

I don't have a problem with scan lines, I have a problem with the inconsistant retro-y-ness of the art. Turning off the scan lines doesn't fix that.
