Been Away for a While: How well are sieges working these days?
« on: January 20, 2015, 06:13:31 am »

I shamefully wandered off and got distracted by Kindgom of Loathing for a while and I haven't really done much serious playing since the very early days of this new release. At the time there was a vexing problem with attackers not working quite right where even if you were right next a hostile goblin civ you would not necessarily ever get attacked by it etc. I'm curious how well attackers are working at this point?

Are large goblin sieges possible and do they happen with any sort of consistency or frequency?

Sieges come generally later, but yes, you have some rather serious sieging in the late parts of your fort.

They don't necessarily happen each year and not at the same date like previously, though.

If you want heavy sieging then you need to study the legends and carefully pick your civ and embark location. Some people report never having sieges while others have managed to get yearly ones.

Someone mentioned capturing a few prisoners and keeping them alive meant much larger sieges the following years but then upon killing the prisoners they reverted to small sieges.

I haven't played since 40.08.  But in my new 40.23 game, I parked next to (I had goblins listed on the embark screen with a red line next to their name) a goblin civ and started getting yearly sieges after I got about 70 dwarves.  8-10 the first year.  14ish + 8 trolls second year.  There are also actually "Troll Spearman" now, which I don't recall seeing before.

I just got my first artifact weapon ever - A wolf bone crossbow - so I am looking forward to them coming back so I can test it. :)

Yeah, trolls come with weapons and proper armor now.

Trolls have weapons now? *titters with excitement* I'd best work on keeping all my dwarves alive past the minimum siegeable population then :/

Now that's cool. Goblin sieges have always been way too squishy. This should help give them some teeth.

It suddenly makes sense now why goblins can make all those two handed weapons they can't even hold themselves! It's for the trolls! The trolls could even use them with a shield should trolls end up using shields, I don't exactly how that stuff works. It'd be kind of cool if they were half as skilled as goblin soldiers because of their [SLOW_LEARNER].

Its a feature. Impregnating booze is a planned tech tree for dwarves and this is a sneak peek at it.

so anybody else have the issue of getting the notification of a siege and then you unpause and it disappears? i did edit the copulation cap on goblins so i could run a smaller fort, but even the necromancers wont attack me.

Sieges still happen, but be wary, because invaders can now actually climb your walls.

Yeah. Fortifications kill climbing, though.

Emabarking near a necromancer will guarantee multiple large sieges of very tough undead, and quickly. I had one just after my first dwarven caravan. Spent more than a year inside the fort picking off undead with traps. Lost half my population in the process, too. Good times.
