How do I leave the starting fortress?
« on: January 20, 2015, 05:26:08 am »

I'm trying out Adventure mode for the first time.

My first adventurer was looting a small storage room when he accidentally built a campfire in the doorway and starved to death.

My second adventurer is currently roaming the halls of the vast underground dwarven complex he was born in.
He's found one other inhabitant, a blacksmith, who mentioned a group of troublesome bandits in a lair far to the east.
I want to go there and smash them, but I have no idea how to exit this fortress.

I've found what seems to be an underground highway or road of sorts, which has occasional cave spider webs (fortunally no spiders) and stairwells leading down at either end. There are what looks like natural cave branches dotting the sides of this highway, but I have no idea what foul creatures lurk in there, and besides they look like an easy place to get lost in.

As I mentioned, there are two stairwells. The eastern one leads down to a forge area filled with statues and what looks like a dining hall, which is where my dorf woke up. The floor between the highway and the forge area is used for storage of various clothing and leather armor (which I pilfered).

The westmost stairwell, at the other end of the highway, leads down to a similar forge area, which is where I encountered the aforementioned blacksmith. There is a storage floor on the way down there as well.

I've been looking for staircases up from the highway floor, but I haven't found any. The forges are all at the lower levels. I'm hesitant to start spelunking the cave entrances, but it looks like I have no choice.

Has anyone had similar experiences? Any advice for a newcomer?

Dwarven fortresses are a nightmare to navigate in adventure mode. The underground highway thing you described is probably a tunnel - they connect various underground structures.
What you're looking for is a central "staircase" type affair - with ramps going up around a central column. That will take you a hundred-ish z-levels to the surface.

If you can't find it (and I'd be surprised if you could, without a huge amount of luck and/or patience) you could always use DFHack's reveal utility, which will let you see everything and navigate the fortress with the greatest of ease.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

If you are really unlucky you will start in a fortress that has NO exit from your location. I guess that happens about one time in twenty or so.

Otherwise finding the exit isn't so bad once you get used to the general layout tendencies.

I have two tips:
1. Go into sneak mode. You will notice where dwarves are hanging out from a distance. That is usually near the exit.
2. Pick up a bunch of junk clothing. Drop it to mark off areas that you have explored and are dead ends.

Thanks for the advice, people!

I went into the cave system and encountered a gremlin. My eyebrows furrowed until they became as one, and my axes made an audible *sharpness* sound as I drew them. The creature's mischievous little face contorted into the grimace of someone presently soiling themselves.

I eventually managed to find its head where it had landed, and butchered it for the pretty skull. I then decided to wash off my new gremlin blood coating in a nearby river. I figured since I was a Novice swimmer it'd be okay.

I drowned.

Think I'll stick to Fortress mode, or possibly try a Human adventurer next time.

Dont want rub salt in your wounds, but... you can jump over campfires.
And yeah like the lovely ptb_ptb stated that some forts have no exit, some would say its a world gen bug. But in reality some dwarven forts close themselves off from the world.
Just remember the fort name and never spawn there ever.
I love you guys

Oh and with the new cave adaptation mechanics will cause your dwarf once they do escape to vomit and act dazed until they walk inside.

Thats no fun. Drown your adventurer, at the same time as learning to swim it also increases endurance and toughness incredibly fast.
I was drowning a human once and checked his stats and he had gotten his stats nice and high. Drunk vampire blood and emerged from the deep a dead man.
Then I realised your stats still increase after ingesting the blood.
