I was fighting this night troll. I was fighting for quite a while, and had gotten the upper hand; I had crippled a leg and done some other damage. All I needed to do now was cripple the weapon hand and i would probably win

The weapon was a fork. Yes. A fork.

But somehow, the troll managed to puncture my lung with this fork. Let me repeat. A fork.

I thought that it wouldn't be too bad; i knew it wasn't deadly despite the game erroneously saying so.

Having one lung pierced means you get winded occasionally, meaning it gets harder for you to do stuff for that turn.

But this turned out to be my undoing, as the troll caught me winded and somehow knocked me out. With a fork.

Then it proceeded to do several more jabs. One of which managed to pierce the skull and kill me.

A fork killed me.

A FORK KILLED ME!

What's next? Spoons? Sticks? Bones? I can understand being stabbed in the heart by a trident, but you shouldn't need armor to help your skull resist a fork. AGAIN. A FORK.

How embarrassing. At least the troll's crippled for life.

Forks have a very small contact area (1 or 2 IIRC) making them fantastic stabbing weapons.

And yes the fork most probably peirced you easily because of its small contact area and the night trolls strength.
It probably slipped through your ribs.

Fine. Maybe it's logical to lose to even such an inferior weapon, but that doesn't mean it isn't still embarrasing.

Dude, I once got KO'd by a night troll type thing, which proceeded to remove my backpack and beat me to death with it.

I personally thought it was awesome, but it was early in that character's existence so yeah...

I would urge you to attacked hooved animals, if you want to be outrage/embarassed though.

I managed to kill someone with a plump helmet once, which I found quite hilarious doing.

I also had a dwarf one killed with his own pants while wearing them I believe, or at least by somethingg smashing him with his own pants. A dwarf even made a figurine of the event while in a mood.

I might have to try a fork as a weapon someday ...

Aww, it looks beautiful, I love you and would feed you if you where starving, shelter you if it was raining, roll up a character for you if your arms where missing.

What Orange Wizard said. Contact area of cutlery is so small, it'll drive through a helmet. Also, since night trolls are very strong, even the ones described as weak, their strikes and bites can come crashing through helmets and upper mailed arms.

It'll sound very counter-intuitive, but when you first meet a night troll and you check to see if they are carrying a weapon, it's better to avoid targeting their weapon arm when they are found with cutlery. This is because they are restricted to the types of attack you can block with a shield as all creatures with a weapon default to strikes and bites. An unarmed night troll is much much more dangerous than one with cutlery since it now features a grab attack.

You shouldn't be embarrassed. The night troll sounds humble, but short of a creature with a special attack (which is somewhat OP and poorly circumvented -- see web), it's the most dangerous and able opponent you can face. Particularly the unarmed ones who are skinny.

Now, if you have meat shields helpful companions, attacking its weapon arm is a valid plan; they'll, in all likelihood, grab one of your companions, preventing them from dodging.
If you get caught by one alone, Armok help you, go for the legs. Unless you're really powerful, leave it crippled and flee with your minor injuries, since it can't catch you prone.
