What to do with migrants?

I don't want these useless cheese makers or dumb dyers.  Good ways to dispose of them?  I basically want;

-The migrants will go to a "safeish" meeting spot
-I choose who comes to the burrow
-The rest are used do to something "fun"

I just need to think of what that !!fun!! may be.  It needs to be
-Emotionally stable !!fun!!
-I'm starting out; and am noob, nothing complex!

Emotionally stable fun?
That's relatively hard to make, actually...
What I do with migrants with useless jobs (or excessive duplicates) is make them useful - you can NEVER have too many miners/engravers/farmers/furnace operators/haulsmiths!

Of how many people are we talkin about? Personally, whenever I hit 80 dwarves I try to have at least 20 of them in military service. Of course you won't drag them all into the army so try doing new stuff, I like to have a thriving textile industry as it needs a lot of work with all that shearing/spinning/weaving/plant processing/silk gathering... And the clothesmaking of course. Also, at least 5 dedicated furnace operators...

I don't know about emotionally stable fun. Not so sure that is possible, at least, it isn't !!FUN!!


I don't like having more than 2 or 3 engravers, to easily train them to do máster engravings without smoothing several emptied floors.

Small 3x3 holes near the fortress entrance with doors all designated as a burrow that you assign them to then lock them into?

Its a feature. Impregnating booze is a planned tech tree for dwarves and this is a sneak peek at it.
Unless you're past reproductive age. Then you're pretty much an extension of your kids' genitalia

Face them off against various creatures in an arena, those who survive get to join the fortress!

So far the best idea is the Suicide Squad.

All misfits shall be in suicide squadron vs the... oh I don't know.  OH yes!  The zombies I'll be catching! Hehehe...

Train them up with hammer and shield (3x)
At the start of granite!

Make 'em haul bricks to the new wall (3x)
At the end of felsite!

Send them to depths of hell(3x)
When you've had some fun!

Nobody is "useless" in my fort.  This one melts stuff into bronze and iron, this one makes mechanisms for traps, this one shears the yaks, these three smooth and engrave the walls, etc.  I try to tailor jobs to what the dwarf likes.

Useless? In Dwarf Fortress? Nah... Everybody can join to military, even childrens as baits.

I just hate having these drunk degenerates dwarfs doing absolutely nothing, but still eating all my stuff.  It's annoying I tell ya.  I think I may just draft 'em into the military.  All them who don't work, shall find a rigorous training schedule!  Muhahaha!

I created the plebs caste. They are haulers, wood choppers, furnace monkeys etc. They do all the unqualified labor.

One migrant wave was sent to 1st cavern, where they slaughtered everything, including a flying forgotten beast. They starved to death after being too successful.

Second migrant wave was left outside the fortress, and an ettin came.

Third migrant wave is currently hunting vermings near the pile of corpses. I hope they die soon so I can recover the bodies (n-n-n-necromancer tower).

I had a lot of migrants in my fort I could not figure out what to do with 10, 12, 20 idlers ::)

Then I enabled plant gathering and also made a lot of picks   :P

They now gather fruit from trees in masse and I have a fair bit of miners chewing through stone. ;D
