No one ever hostile?
« on: January 18, 2015, 11:04:38 am »

So is adventure mode completely broken right now, or am I doing something wrong? I have the latest release, and so far no matter what I do no one is ever hostile. Peasants watching their friends getting murdered will simply comment on how horrible these violent acts are. The guards in a castle will sit idly while their rulers get murdered. Hell, even bandits are friendly, both before AND after their (also friendly) captain gets slaughtered.

Do I have to mod the raws somehow? I'm playing a human adventurer. I have not yet found a single humanoid who defaulted to hostile in several hours of adventuring. Even more, I can't find a way to gain renown, so it's more or less impossible to get more than two or three people in the party, which means I can't tackle any of the large monster hunts or I get more or less rekt. So, basically, unless someone has a fix for this adventure mode is unplayable for me at the moment.

to be fair discipline skill is needed for sentient races to act like they did before where they snap and go insane on a single assault(which was commented on the most back when crime was psychically known to everyone and you can't get away with murder).
though we kinda found ways to get around getting more companions by use of the wait command, the game only stops you from recruiting more people if you ask someone to join while having a large party on site. if you dump all your companions in a near by area and walk away dropping your companion count to 0 then you can recruit the guys who said something about having a large party.
the best bit is you can walk the guy back to the companions you told to sit and ask them to follow you again.
also what with the bandits now being visible and not X times the size of your companion count you can have an army now with lil worry of being curb stomped outside of the local forgotten beast, or HFS.

bandits being friendly might mean their a roaming nomad group, or a local army.

The bandits are at a camp though, with loot and the bandit icon and everything. And finding them comes from the "We've got bandits" line of questioning, so I dunno. While getting away with murder should certainly be possible, it definitely feels broken that even a lord's personal guard will just sit there while you hack him to bits.

Then there's the bit where they have their backs to you(which you can't tell unless you're sneaking), on top of the whole bandits who set up tents are 100% super aggro and will attack you(toadyone fixed the foreversleep problem and those guys will kill you on sight), compared to the ones that set up the old camps.

Ehh my best bet is to avoid fame(pick up any companions then tell them to wait somewhere then pick up some more allowing you to bypass the recruit limit.) and grind on the super easy bandits so that you can murder the tougher enemies.

The thing is about lords and ladies is that there's insurrections happening every time(even you can start one) thus those guards might not be loyal to the current lord since chances are someone going to dethrone him.
if you talk to them you get a line saying there's X amount hunting for the throne, and you could rally the guards into a insurrection, and rare case of seeing one happen live.
I guess toadyone did it this way to prevent loyalty cascade happening every time someone wants the crown. That all said, getting fame is alot more tedious and a chore only for those who seek it, but I would keep passive enemies over being unable to retire/fast travel out of a site due to one accidental punch.

Edit:The main reason everyone's not down your throat is because of the new discipline skill, with out it people are prone to fears and scared of death. including the adventurer who if near a dead body or fighting will start crying.

It's very odd though when you can enter a town and butcher people left and right and hardly anyone lifts a finger. I went to an elf settlement that my civ was at war with and nobody even made the slightest attempt to attack me, and there were plenty of bowmen around that were more than capable of killing an unarmored adventurer.

The morale and faction system were completely overhauled for .40.xx, but it wasn't really ever fixed. Toady's already working on the next "arc", so bug fixing is off the main burner for now. Best you can hope for is that it's revisited someday.

I had a similar experience the first time I played adventurer mode after the 0.40.xx release. I made a human adventurer and started in a mead hall. Asked around for baddies to kill and was pointed to a camp of kobolds nearby. I go there with my companions to find the camp with a bunch of kobolds just standing around and ignoring me and my companions. I cut them down one by one and need to confirm each attack with alt+y. The kobolds just stand there and never attack even as I murder everyone. I loot the corpses and their stockpiles and return to the town but nobody seems particularly impressed as I brag about my achievement, in fact it is quite the opposite. The villagers refer to me as a "killer" and say that I am "unhinged". Whatever, I find other camps of human and elf bandits and it is the same story there. After murdering a load of criminals that these villagers complained about, I have gained a reputation as a villain. I then managed to locate a vampire in another village. I do what I always did in older versions, I confront the vampire. She happily admits her true nature and the sprite changes as it is supposed to when a vampire is revealed. She does however not become hostile to me or anyone else. The civilians don't react at all. I attack the vampire and one of the villagers comes to her defence and attacks me! I kill that guy and the vampire escapes but now I am apparently an outlaw and people spit at me wherever I go. I retired the character. I guess this is not normal game behavior. Can this particular world be corrupted in some way? I tried the same world in fortress mode and I soon got a visit from a goblin trade caravan, I guess that is not supposed to happen either.

Ive confronted vampires and revealed their true nature just to have them spit at me.
Infact I once confronted a vampire revealed his ID and attacked him for his blood but left him alive. Said character died and I made another in the vampires city. Went to his house and he had the nightcreature icon, talked to him and he spat and said he hated me but didnt attack.
Weird huh.
Yeah its kinda bugged but sometimes the people you dont think will attack you do attack.

This.
Adventure Mode seems really broken now, which is a shame because i always loved it.
A town got attacked by a night troll in the middle of the market and my character was right in the midst of it, cool right? Yeah it was cool (really i loved it) until some of the merchants decided it would be a good idea to just turn hostile to everyone on sight. The strange thing though was that they never attacked, they just cried over the corpse of the Dark Hag consort and didnt move at all. When i tried to calm them this happened:

Well, guess we just have to wait. I dont really mind, its just a little unfortunate.

I also had a nice talk with the local hamster men, which was nice.

EDIT: Also, alligator recruits

Merchant 1 is clearly unhinged. That is the response of no man sane. Merchant 2 wants nothing to do with that.

All i can hope is that the "Tavern update" will not take a couple of year, as the adventure mode is in a broken state that would really need to be looked over.

The 40.x serie with the world update feature and the new sites had so much potential to be awesome, but currently the AI reactions to every situations are seriously broken, the interface is filled by pointless reports about every single animals of the world looking at you funny, and many bugs that break your exploring fun (extreme lag in some gob sites by example, stuff respawning after you killed them...) .

I hope after the tavern arc Toady will be able to take a look into adventure mode

Vampires are all uniformly aggressive in my world, and they're constantly on the hunt. None of them even bother to blend into society, it's just one rampage after another. Other than that, I've seen members of rival factions attack each other, and dwarves and goblins will always go at each other to the death. I'm playing a human too, and I don't get any attacks from factions who I"m enemies of. Sometimes they may respond to witnessing a kill of one of their group members by attacking, but the chance seems leaner than it should be.

This is a huge problem for me currently. The only thing there was to do in Adventure Mode to begin with was kill people, and now that single activity is broken because no-one will fight you.

Aggression in this game has a bit to do with the ai's perception of 'danger'

Bandits actually do math in their head to calculate how strong you/allies in sight are versus their strength/allies in sight.
Dropping your weapon, injuring them, or any number of things can affect their aggression levels, although as noted above some are more hostile than others, and some are almost completely benign

Has anyone tried modding all sentient races to have [NATURAL_SKILL:DISCIPLINE:15] ? That would seem to be something that could be tweaked to see what setting gives the best results.
