This is my 1-and-a-halfst game. I joined as a replacement halfway through another game, and that game still isn't finished yet. So this is basically my first game as well.

The Trolls gather in the cave. Day 1 begins.

The stoning of Fred the Troll has all the remaining trolls in the cave in a tizzy. Each has their own place in the cave, but they gather in the middle and discuss dinner, and who to cook.

Day One of Mafia is at once the most useless, useful, and frustrating day of mafia playing.  The general strategy in most games of mafia is to start day one with a stage known as "RVS" wherein you ask other players questions and make votes based on mundane things.  The idea is to trip the scum up with questions, but this rarely actually happens in practice.  However, the voting and questioning patterns from this day can be invaluable in furture days, and RVS usually ends before the day does as people begin to enter into a more serious stage of the game.

A few words of advice:
1. Keep your cool.  Whether you are town or scum, nothing is gained by panicking and flailing.  If anything, this will simply get you lynched.  If you feel under pressure, take a break.  Some people play better under mild pressure (like me), but heavy pressure crushes all but the strongest-willed players.
2. No personal attacks.  All this does is build up bad feelings and resentment, and particularly in beginner games can drive people away from playing more games of mafia.
3. Play to win.  Don't give up, it helps nobody and leaves a sour taste in people's mouths.

I may chime in until my mafia game is done with advice for the new players, so stay tuned.

Dani, do you prefer to be the informed minority, or the uninformed majority?

Dani: While idle banter and commentary have a place in any game, mafia tends to be more serious business than other games.  Once other people start posting, watch what they are doing closely.  This goes to all new players: the best way to learn mafia is by observing the play of others, at least in my opinion.
