Description: Anabel is a young woman in her late teens. She cuts her black curly hair short, with the exception of her fringe, which she keeps longs to hide most of her face. She is short and skinny, although she is quite stronger that what others would think. She tries her best to keep a masculine voice, but the best she can get is what seems like a teen who is still waiting to hit puberty. Her only other remarkable physical characteristics are her pale skin and the scar that cuts below his left eye, under the fringe. Depending on the amount of light, her eyes can be seen as anywhere from yellow to a dark brown.
Her disguise as a young man is almost paper thin, and it seems as miracle that she somehow manages to fool anyone, but she has been doing it for years, and if she is lucky, she will keep her disguise intact.

Background: The only child of a former Conquistador that had become a swordsmith after losing his leg, Anabel was raised almost as a boy. His father had wanted a heir, and he constantly called her Íñigo, despite her mother's protests. With his father, she learnt swordfighting techniques, and how to hide "her shame". This only intensified when her mother died of a fever. In time, Ana Belén Montoya almost disappeared, with Íñigo becoming the identity she used with everyone on their small village.
When her father died, being still 14 herself, she was sent with Captain Diego Alatriste, one of her father's former comrades. Had it been known that she was a girl, she would have ended being sent to the household of some noble or worse, but she was lucky. During her journey, Anabel thought that she would become a soldier under Alatriste's tutelage. Little did she know that the former duelist and captain had been blinded by a shot and was little more than a beggar at this point.
So for three years, Anabel fought to survive and learnt with the Captain. Not about fencing and shooting, but about surviving, running and taking what advantages she could get. In the end, she learnt more about war and fighting than she believed she would, as the Captain's words always had a hidden meaning behind them. And it was often one about how war was a glorified massacre.
In time, the Captain was conscripted out of pure (bad) luck, and Anabel with him. She is thrilled by the opportunity to fight as her father did, and her skill has caught the eye of some higher echelons of the regiment, as she has been trusted with a power sword to fight the enemies of the Imperium. Deep inside, she is just a child that wants to earn glory and recognition. Little does she know she is nothing more than an statistic.
Comrade: Captain Don Diego Alatriste
Demeanor: Lucky/Mentor
A captain no more, Diego Alatriste is still called by his former rank though. A father to his men, Diego's career ended when he was blinded by a bullet when trying to help one of his men. Already a captain when Anabel's father served with him, Don Diego is growing old, but he keeps himself fit, especially when considering his age and condition. He has seen too much war in his opinion, but he considers that by serving in the Imperial Guard, he is preventing another young man's life from being wasted.
Considering he is as blind as a man can be, it is incredible that he is still able to land a shot, or move through the battlefield, let alone being eligible for the Imperial Guard. Some say he is lucky. Others say that war flows through his veins, and that for someone like him, being blind is a minor problem. In Anabel's opinion... While skilled and experienced, the captain is just plain lucky. She has seen him dodge bullets and las shots just because he had gone to the ground because he had dropped something.
Speaking of Anabel... The Captain's acuteness seems to run out whenever she is near, as he seems oblivious to her paper thin disguise as a man. Whether this is because he genuinely believes she is a man, or because he prefers not to hurt her pride, no one can tell.
