Returning after 18months - need advice
« on: January 14, 2015, 11:45:32 pm »

I've been away 18months and need advice on where to start again... seems my favorite newb_rollup_pack and graphics package both have ended its life. Anyways here's my list of questions, thanks for those who know the answers:

1) What's the current best set of tools and graphic package for playing the game again?
2) Are monsters finally able to attack walls?  Are goblins finally able to attack walls and gates?
3) What's the most current tutorial for the game which is a good tutorial and not just some fella who just plays the game? I know the sticky has tutorial links, but those are ancient ancient old... not sure why a new set hasn't replaced them.

Thanks,
NTJedi

1)  LazyNoob is likely the most user friendly.
Myself, I use DF Therapist and rarely DFHack.  No graphics pack.

2)No to both.  Bds still have issues.  But emotions and undead are harder to deal with now.
Waterfalls no longer outweight spouse/family death now, and in fact theres now a longer term 'stress' level in addition to short-term happiness.

3) DK.  You said you played before.  Just embark onto an easy area with food and drink and seeds and picks.

DF still runs the same at its core, but now:

-plant gathering is buffed, food/drink is plentiful
-combat overhauled but fort mode isnt that different.
-stepladders for multi-tile tree harvesting
-multi tile/zlevel trees
-zombies are monsters now.
-pulp mechanics for combat means sponges can die
-No more curious structures underground for now
-Demons make a special 1 of a kind slab
-Worldgen continues
-emotions matter now

-Civilians will panic if they see anything upsetting, give your starting seven Discipline skill to avoid having your fort locked up by a stray wombat tooth spooking everyone
-You're set for wood forever if you chop down ~3 trees, so a full-time woodcutter is unnecessary.
-Don't fuck with necromancers, embark FAR away from their towers, at least to start
-Sieges/ambushes are hella inconsistent now, so you might get attacked by ~20 goblins by first summer and then never see any of them again

My advice is that if you embark in a place with lots of trees cut them all down and you'll have hundreds of wood. New trees will have grown way before you run out.

And now food and booze production are much easier unless you live in a place where nothing grows. Just gather plants outside constantly and you'll have plenty.

Beware of climbers. Both trolls and goblins can climb multi level walls, so you need overhangs (probably at least two levels up) or roofing to keep them out.
Arcvasti is exaggerating slightly with the wombat tooth (unless it's from a Wombat Man), but only slightly. Remains of "sentient" creatures spook civilians, and, possibly more importantly, caravans, which cause caravans to just up and leave without any notice (if you happen to look at them at the time there is an exclamation mark above the head of the spooked one). This means that a refuse pile for sentient remains will have to be kept away from civilians and caravans (or the remains dealt with destructively). Personally I don't allocate any embark points to skills, and just accept the fact that I get a lot of interruptions when trying to work in a cavern where monsters have gone rampage (slaughtering hordes of troglodytes, for instance). It might be that particularly sensitive dorfs react to remains of animals, but I haven't seen it.

The amount of wood you need depends on your play style (I use wood to create a completely enclosed courtyard for grazers and trapped approach, for instance). Also, if you're going to make steel without access to fossil fuel or magma, you'll need a fair amount of wood to feed the process.

-You can now designate rooms to noble positions, and they will be automatically reassigned when the dwarf holding that position changes.
-You can now set prority levels for jobs such as mining/engraving/woodcutting. Dwarves will complete all accessible higher priority jobs before moving onto a lower rank job. 1 is most important, 7 is least.
-Levers now have an emergency DO IT NOW! mode. Will cause stress when used though.
-The new emotion system requires you to focus more on long term happiness (nice rooms, good food) than short term (standing under a waterfall)

it turns out Dog Bone Doctors aren't very good at doctoring.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
No but monsters/invaders can climb and jump, drawbridges and walls are still indestructible but if you want a gate that building destroyers can destroy,
do what I do and use floodgates as your gate (Just make sure you do 2 layers of floodgates in case a sock or a rock are going to prevent a floodgate from closing)
