Author Topic: Can building destroyers destroy lowered (as in horizontal) bridges?  (Read 3698 times)

Hello

I know a draw bridge can raised and create a sort of insta wall that attackers cannot break through (very convenient that).  But say I want the bridge to block a hole in the ground.  Can an attacker that is a building destroyer that is standing above the bridge (ie, this isn't an attacker coming in from below) destroy an open bridge?

I'm asking because I had floor grates as part of a somewhat elaborate draining system for my drowning chamber, and the trolls mucked it up by removing the grates, breaking the path and leaving most other goblins and trolls just wandering outside.  This had the side benefit of me testing my military vs them - despite being outnumbered 1 to 4 they massacred the invaders, only to be stopped when the game crashed ha.

So the idea would be to have bridges lay flat on top of where the grates used to be, and then retract the bridges to let the water flow into the drainage tunnels when needed.  But if trolls can destroy those bridges, that doesn't help.

I don't think so.
I hope they can, but so far I haven't see that happened.

In my experience they dont destroy bridges. It would actually be a weakness if they did though.

The wording in the wiki suggests that they do not, but I believe I saw bridges being destroyed (a while ago...). However, it might have been the terribly upset dorfs berserking through the fortress as they saw their friends and families being slaughtered.

I don't care. I have discovered that if you spawn elves this way, cats will chase them down and eat them.

I saw bridges being destroyed by fire (Was a bit awkward, I was about to restore retractable bridge when I was ready to fight the dragon, only to discover that bridge is no more. So environmental hazards like body temperature should destroy bridges too.

Cool, but wouldn't this likely lead to tongues having a '[SPEACH]' tag, and thus via necromancy we would have nearly unkillable reanimated tongues following necromancers spamming 'it is sad but not unexpected'?

Raised bridges are immune to heat but lowered bridges can be destroyed by extreme heat if they are not built of magma safe materials.

Unless something's changed recently they absolutely can. I've had problems luring building destroyers into traps inside the fortress because they stopped advancing to tear down the drawbridge.

Bridges can also be destroyed if they are switched while there is a creature of size 1.2m or greater where the lowered bridge would be.

All bridges, all traps (including pressure plates) and upright spikes are safe from the attention of building destroyers; only environment effects (heat, cave-ins) and your own dwarfs can directly demolish them, and bridges can break when you try to operate them while they're held down by an overly heavy creature.
Very hot forgotten beasts and the like can melt spikes or bridges when they pass over them, but that's an effect of heat alone, not of the "building destroyer" property.

According to DF wiki bridge will not operate when unit with size higher than 1200000 (see list of such units) is standing on it and deconstruct itself when you try to lower it on such unit. Note the size is not cumulative but separately checked for each unit on/under the bridge.

I thought raised bridges made of non-magma safe materials would be destroyed if magma entered the tiles the bridge would occupy when lowered.

This applies too to retracting bridges?
