I think my question was missed. Do I respond to messengers on the same turn or no? Tomcost sent me a letter and we are right next to each other on a lonely island. Do we get them straight away?

I'm pretty sure that's already been answered elsewhere with a no.

Changed my actions a bit to not tax my economy too much.

Also, are the lines connecting territories over water bridges, fords or maybe even something else?

He said you have to wait a bit because you have to send a runner, which can get intercepted. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure I would've gotten the intel I needed by now

I'm pretty sure that was someone other than mastahcheese who said no, but I might have been mistaken. I thought mastahcheese missed my question, anyway.
Using Spies, messangers, and other recon units is instant, and doesn't require time (you have to wait for the info to come back, but giving the order to send someone out is instant.

Pretty sure what he mean there was that sending out spies/messengers/whatever doesn't take up any time in terms of your seasonal actions.

But I believe he also means you have to wait until the next season to RECEIVE messages, or spy reports, or things of that sort.

Yes, this. And during that time of waiting, there's a chance of some other lord to screw you over (assuming people try)
I would say that you don't have to wait if the person you're sending a message to is bordering you, but if I were the one sending out spies, I'd have them stationed in other people's territory to maximize their potential for causing damage, even for short-distance runs.

And if you think a draft of that size is suicide, you can always do a small draft.

I seem to have chosen possibly the worst time to start this, as real life is currently conspiring to screw me over, so I have no idea when in the world I'll be able to do anything meaningful on this or anything else of mine. I'm sorry.

Oh. What if it's literally just two of us an island like three territories away from any other land?

You ninja'd me, by the way.

If the two characters are in the same room, then clearly you don't need to send a messenger to go talk to the person.
But I know that you're meaning your island with tomcost over in the north-east.

Granted, the odds of people trying to interfere with that are next to none this early in the game, but I really don't like the idea of making exceptions for particular situations, knowing that the unforeseeable future may require me to change that rule.
If I allowed you two to talk freely, and someone wanted to ship a spy overseas to screw with you guys, then I can't just say "Oh, you're no longer allowed to talk freely and I can't tell you why" because that would be rather obvious.

So, since I'm in a mountain range, can I talk to those south of me within the turn or do I have to wait an extra turn to traverse it?

You still have to follow the rules for messangers.
I mean, unless you want your character to go do that.
Which, I mean, I suppose that would be an efficient form of communication, if not wretchedly dangerous.

Apiks is to the far east and south, where the mountains end. Since my area is 99% mountain, does this mean I have hindered movement through my territory?

Oh, I know what you mean now.
No, terrain only takes effect during an actual battle. It's assumed that there are known mountain passes and roads for messengers and spies and whatnot, including army movement where there aren't enemies present.
