☢!!Science!!Experiments!!☢
« on: January 11, 2015, 09:38:48 pm »

So, first and foremost, Hello!

I was looking over the forums for a while and decided that there needs to be a place where all of these !!Science!! experiments can be compiled.  A place where we scientists, whether we study the most effective way to give warmth to kill dwarfs, or make a revolutionized defense system, can post our findings.  Whatever we do, it must be compiled and documented in a comprehensive place!

I urge all of you below to post your findings.  Once you post, I shall copy and paste it up on top here.  Comment on other people's and enjoy!  It would be great if you could do it in this format below;

What are you trying to solve/accomplish?:

Did it work?:

Isn't a link to the Dwarven Child Care thread mandatory?

We've had these before, it's worth mining them for links if anything else. Here they are, for your convenience.

Not recently, but the most important isn't keeping the experiments, but their results.
Most experiments get converted into information at the wiki, and the mega projects go to the SDT page. Try necroing old threads tough, it doesn't hurt as long as you add something there.

I did some intensive testing of armour sets back in DF2012 which produced scientifically unreliable (i.e., CI <90%) evidence that rigid steel armour (i.e., boots, breastplates, gauntlets, greaves, and helms) with flexible adamantine under-armour (i.e., cloaks, mail shirts, mittens, socks, and trousers) provides optimal damage reduction in fights against equal numbers of combatants per side. The confidence interval rose with each successive round of testing, but I simply did not have the patience to go through all 17,000 planned test series and make a pretty presentation about it; so, take it or leave it as you will. I add this to the discussion because it represents a stark contradiction to the prevailing narrative that adamantine is the best rigid armour material; though, that was for DF2012 with its known bugs involving the behaviour of projectiles. With the changes in DF2014 it is entirely possible that adamantine is entirely superior; but, a similar test series with a control group and several test populations would be necessary to prove it. Someone should get on that!

Whoa ! Dwarven metrology. That's something. :P

But nobody will get on that, i'm afraid. Because nobody does metrology for fun. Ever.

As a point of order, the OP seems to be soliciting dwarven engineering more than dwarven science. Engineering solves problems; science collects data and theorizes about relationships.
