Why you got to be so awesome and efficient and stuff?
« on: January 11, 2015, 04:52:16 pm »

So... I play with the starter packs, but I haven't actually played in close to 2 months because I'm perpetually waiting for the next thing to come out.  DFHack updates and the packs release... and I'm all excited until I check the homepage and see another bug-fix has been released.  Read through the bug fixes... sigh... *cancel download*  I can wait a few more days to be really really caught up 'cause those look useful.  Now I'm all "Inns?  Taverns?  Those would be soo useful in my games... awww... crap.  I'll just check back in 3 months".  I'm torn between the awesomely rapid pace of development and the nostalgia of those days when you knew that you could bring a game or twelve to its fun conclusion before the next release.

Well the taverns release is probably going to take a year so don't worry about that for now.
You should try the game without the starter packs just to try it out, I play only with soundsense,
I don't even use therapist and the freedom to be able to play immediately once an update for DF comes out is great.
Ever since I started I played vanilla (with some raw fixes such as less pain receptors in bone and nails and cartilage being able to heal) with no third party tools and maybe you'd like it as well if you tried it.

We're pretty sure Toady tries to release the new version the day after the Starter Pack gets updated. Don't feel bad. He's doing it on purpose.

I always wait for DFHack to update before I download a bugfix version, but learning to play without third-party utilities (as awesome as they may be) is a very important skill if you want to try out new content as soon as it's released.

Yes, just like job priorities took a year and a half, just as you would expect for such a far-reaching feature.

Well, df2014 wasn't supposed to take 2 years, so we don't have any reliable estimate, all we know is it CAN drag on for a long time.
I dont update much for the bugfixes, barring major game-crashing bugs, I didnt update between 40.10 and 40.23 at all. My advice is just start a game and play until the bitter end, releases be damned

I am quite looking forward to the next 20 or 30 years or so of developmental madness

0.40.01 took two years because "world activation" is literally the biggest feature of the game. I'm not exaggerating, that is not hyperbole, it is the main point of the game. Taverns are probably not going to take nearly as long as something as fundamental as multi-tile trees+combat/movement split+world activation+other sites.

I don't think the Tavern update will take too long.
It might be it uses some of the code in Hospitals and meeting areas , so who knows.
My personal guessestimate : Less than 1 month.

I'm exaggerating but I doubt we will have it before April.
I always like to overestimate the time it takes for an update rather than underestimate it because then it sorta feels like a pleasant surprise rather than "ah finally, the next update is here".

the pace is nice and all until you realize that adventure mode still has broken responses (both vocal [It was inevitable.] and actual physical reactions) and vampires to mention a few major ones
oh and that there are still some trivial raw issues (most notably some things in tissue_template_default.txt)
did i mention that the wrestling ai has been broken for over three years now

It was inevitable!

But yeah, several issues in Adventure mode that needs an overhaul, you have reported your findings and updated with a savegame?

They have been known since early July since they were present since 0.40.1.

Toady did say he was gonna try to upload new versions more often, kinda in the rhythm they've been coming out since .40 but I doubt he can keep up the pace he's been going at.

I expect .40.24 is gonna be around for a while.

I'm using 34.11 until 40.xx is done updating. Might be stupid since I can't participate in the majority of succession games and can't use the new raws people make unless they're specified for 34.11.

I think it's done now. Toady said he's moving on to taverns and inns.
