Yes.

As per this page:

[MAXAGE:1:1]

That means they die 1 year after their birth.  You should use the wiki.

Vermin's more complicated than that. I have a ton and a half of cave spiders in a cage in .40.11 or so, and not a one of them has died in several years (and cave spider maxage has been 1:1 in .34.11 already, no change there). Might be worth a bug report - max age doesn't apply to (some?) vermin.

More likely it's a weird aspect that's never been explored in depth, especially since adopting vermin is useless at best, counterproductive at worst: since they're not proper creatures, most of the pet handling code results in nonsense when applied to them.
