Magma crab has given birth to a girl?

Depends... is it a fellow Magma Crab or a Dorf? *gg*

Considering that animals giving birth usually is announced i see nothing wrong in the announcement itself.
But i havent seen a magma crab giving birth yet.

I didn't find a baby in the magma, so I'm assuming it was another magma crab ;)

I was surprised it said girl rather than magma crab, or something to that effect.

Yeah, magma crabs breed now. If they don't leave the area soon you will have a whole damn colony of the things.

And apparently birth messages are the same for all creatures. So yes, perfectly normal.

Cage trap them and use them in machinegun bunkers ! They live fine outside of magma and they are somewhat cute.

They aren't machineguns anymore to my knowledge. They traded vomiting up basalt to spraying magma in self-defense. Or at least that's what they did last time I encountered them. Sprayed a dwarf and melted most of the fat off her upper half...

So any creature that doesn't have child name tags will be referred to as "boy" and "girl"?  The magma crab doesn't have "multiple litter rare" so I'm surprised it was just the one little crab.  Or maybe it was a bunch of overlapping announcements.

Yeah.  My first big fort had a nice Draltha farm going, and whenever more were born it would say "Stray Draltha has given birth to a boy/girl/twins/triplets" and they would simply be called Draltha Children.

Some animals that would technically lay eggs, like the olm, toad, and, in this case, the magma crab, give live birth for some reason.  I guess you can't really make gooey amphibian eggs into a tasty meal...

honestly I'm not too sure if magma crabs should lay eggs.

Sure they're arthropods and arthropod live birth is so hilariously rare (not including aphids) they SHOULD be able to make eggs, but they don't have nest boxees in magma, so they could not breed without nest boxes.

I do believe wild creatures should lay eggs without nest boxes.
