Trump is a very new type of candidate. He does not follow any party platform. He does not have any belief system, except that whatever he says is the gospel truth.

See, the thing is, Trump isn't just evil personified. He's an awful person and I fear for the fate of the world if he is made President, but he isn't going to go at Cruzing speed nice and predictable in bible-thumping. He's the capitalist part of Republican party, and the part that just likes to say whatever crosses it's mind. He's smart, but he also makes a point of just doing whatever the fuck he wants, because that's part of his appeal to some people. He's already half-way libertarian. Really, the big question here is one of 'so what other stuff is he not an utter dick about'? Because every time this happens, he becomes a little less terrifying to democrats, I'll bet you. He might not gain many, but for those whom find Hilary vs. Trump to be a hard choice...and all the bible-belters are gonna be with Cruz anyway. Trump is sly and cunning and unpredictable, and those are his only real strengths, besides already being damn famous.

I think a large part of American culture values over-inflated bullies and rich people, and Trump happens to be both.  I don't think it goes much deeper than that.  I think he's self-aware about these circumstances... but I don't think that deepens the simple fact that that's what he is and why this is happening.

It's quite frankly mad how he still has support in spite of all his flip-flopping.

Trump is not a libertarian. He's been pretty solidly anti free-speech so far, what with the whole wanting to expand libel laws thing. He might look like a libertarian because he is in some spots more liberal than the other Republicans... but I believe that's just because he is genuinely not a conservative, just whatever he thinks sounds good/wants to say, and the angry populists are the easiest vote for him to curry right now.

I say Libertarian first and foremost because of financial philosophy. Not free speech or free movement or free much of anything else, really.

He's not even libertarian in that, consider he advocates restrictions where they sound good to the populist crowd, and is quite protectionist... and I don't even mean isolationist like a lot of the libertarians tend to be, I mean that he means to punish businesses operating overseas.
