Own up to the damage caused, and why it was caused.

EG, The government damaged these people, and did so for purely political reasons.
The government should take responsibility for the consequences they have forced on those people, and should be accountable for their treatment/care.

Additionally, the government should be forced to admit the statistics of how often people are damaged this way when they serve in the armed forces, and display it clearly and in large text on their recruitment adverts.

I was always one of those "bad at math" people despite otherwise being the "beyond genius" kid in other contexts. At least for me, the issue was in total decontextualization. Other people have gotten at that issue in other ways, what with the stereotypical "what is math even good for" objection.

The answer to that is definitely not more word problems or practical examples. I was forced through plenty of that shit and it frankly just annoyed me. In fact, word problems were always way worse than normal problems because they felt like attempts at obfuscation. I'd always just create a side-list of the values, which was part of what I wanted to begin with.

And while I never became good at math, by college I had managed to at least truly mind-grasp some things beyond elementary operations. I'm not really sure how, exactly.

If I had to take a stab at it I'd say that it was some greater abstract understanding. That's what I believe people have tried to do with word problems and practicality, but while that works for some other subjects (science, for example) it most certainly does not work with math. If I had to try to replace Common Core's obvious idiocy it would be with however the hell you create an abstraction of math in a way public school children can access.

So I'm not exactly saying the answer to the math gap is making Theory of Math a required course for kindergartners but...well, maybe.

I agree with all the manlove for vets (I get to see firsthand the shitty VA service due to my half-brother's travails), but here's the problem -- what do you do for a guy that's spent 4-8 years straight out of high school being trained primarily to be a killboy, with very little technical skills adaptable to civilian life? Where do you employ him?

Didn't we (somewhat) face that problem after WWII and Vietnam?

As far as the math stuff, perhaps we need to study what works and what doesn't work elsewhere in the world? Yes, the cultures would be different, but the brains aren't.

Moreso after WWII than with Vietnam. In the latter, our populace's understanding of the problem backpedaled heavily, and "Blame the vets for going!" was totally a thing.

In WWII, nobody blamed the vets for going. The reason for going was clear and poignant. Not so much with Vietnam, the purpose of which is still debated even today.

Wow feels like the republicans are spending more time on climate change than the democrats, nice.
They're being flat-out disingenuous about it, obviously twisting words to make everything okay, but still.

Yeah, good luck with that.

I agree that the gov't should be on the hook for disabled returning soldiers. And they are...sort of. They get SS disability payments, which is a pittance. You could argue they should just continue to get their military salary for the remainder of their life, but frankly that's not that much for enlisted personnel with short time.

An E-3 (Pvt. 1st Class) with 4 years in gets paid $24,418.80 a year. That's a pretty shitty salary. Now, while they're in uniform, they also have housing provided (or an allotment for off-base housing), and cheaper food and goods through the commissary. But once they muster out, they lose those benefits.

Ironically, there weren't as many crippled veterans of WWII because if you had those kind of injuries you probably didn't survive. We have much lower KIA rates now compared to previous wars, but far higher seriously wounded vets coming home. And Vietnam was a good example of the VA failing returning vets with mental damage. We're seeing a lot of vets now with mental and physical damage.

Fun fact: Obama sent back the bust of Churchill, in part because his father was detained and tortured by British troops in Kenya during Churchill's tenure as part of Churchill's response to the Mau Mau uprising.

You can't teach that. I cannot see how a kid might gain insight into the subject if they're being told how to "think" about a problem.

Yes you can teach that.  I had a very successful session of teaching that just two days ago.  Granted it's a slow, tedious process and you have to accept a low success rate but it can be done.

God, not being able to see this is frustrating. Say what you will about Fox, at least their streaming worked.
