Yeah, but that presumably happened after he immigrated if he caught shit for allegedly not serving in the Great War.

Ok: Hey Franz Ferdinand: "Back then, foreign terrorism was basically nonexistent."

Less jokingly, there was still terrorism and the fear of terrorism (under different names), even if less actually happened. US examples include the Red Scares, the KKK (to varying extents between its forms) and anarchists (notably a bombing of Wall Street).

On a somewhat unrelated note, former Democratic State Senator Leland Yee has just been sentenced to five years in federal prison for attempting to smuggle firearms, rocket launchers, etc. to a known terrorist group. He was always totally against American citizens being allowed to own semi-automatic rifles, but apparently sees no problem with terrorist cells having access to machine guns and rocket-propelled grenade launchers.

The Triads are now a terrorist group? I'm not trying to defend Yee's actions, but let's not make this something it isn't. This was old-fashioned Chinatown corruption and organized crime, not "gib rokkets to ISIS".

He worked with more than the Triads.

Man, if the american public got a dollar for every time one of our politicians did something hypocritical and/or worked directly or indirectly with criminal and/or terrorist groups, the citizenry would be a hell of a lot richer.

Wonder what bit of graft that guy slipped up on, though. We've got plenty of people still alive that did what that guy did and worse that just kinda' stroll around, so one can only assume he slacked on the corruption. Or just was a dem, I guess.

Nah, it's California. If anything he'd be protected because he's a dem. Dude probably just didn't give someone their bribe. And even now he's only getting 5 years, the rest of us would never see the light of day again for dealing with the likes of these.

Such as? I found a Forbes article that he was a facilitator for an arms deal between an undercover FBI agent and a Chinese-American associate to give cash to the associate who would in turn buy weapons from the MILF (most fuckable militant acronym ever), or Moro Islamic Liberation Front in the Phillipines, a group that is not on the State Department terrorist list, in no small part because they're about as Islamic as Louis Farrakhan. They're a bunch of ransom bandits who thought they could cash in on the popularity of global jihad post-9/11. Al-Qaeda tolerated them but never took them seriously, because their MO was to kidnap people for money, not for beheadings.

Again, not saying Lee doesn't deserve to get put away for a long, long time. But there is still a difference between " aiding terrorism" and good old-fashionef organized crime.

True - but back then, foreign terrorism was basically nonexistent.
Ahh, you should tell President William McKinley. His death at the hands of an Anarchist child of immigrants, Congress passed the Anarchist Exclusion Act. Even that wasn't enough, and after we had certain troublemakers from Southern Europe, Congress passed the Emergency Quota Act.

Of course, one of the ultimate legacies of that act, and quotas in general, was its role in excluding Jews from escaping the Holocaust. This is one of the reasons we don't have quotas anymore.

The probable issue from a punitive standpoint is more that they're generally contributed, i.e. the fine wasn't really dinging the person's personal funds. Probably sorta' like fining a company for an individual CEO's unrelated fraud scheme or somethin'.

Oh sweet syrupy Jesus, another one? I'd swear we just had a Republican debate a week ago.

E: A week and a half, sorry. High time for another. Should at least lay good groundwork for the next debate 7 days after this one.
