EDIT: Saying "barbecue some hot dogs" is (to my ear) like saying "whiskey some beer". You can grill a hot dog or a hamburger. You can even "barbecue" it (in the vulgar sense) by slathering barbecue sauce on it, but that does not make it barbecue. I weep for the rest of the country.  :P

Smoked sausage is totally a thing though? :v

In spite of all the jokes around them MREs are really fairly decent, I preferred them to the horrible food served in the difac.  They aren't particularly good either, just decent.  Which, all things considered, seems to be something in their favor.

In the short term, the humble mre is definitely preferable to the dfac, it's just the long term where they get repetitive, rat-fucked, and poor for the body where they get their bad rap.

I still keep a few stashed away for emergencies and extreme laziness
As someone who has lived very close to a military base, I've had a chance to sample some Canadian MREs, and while I wouldn't want to live on them long term, they've definitely got some appeal to them.

Though I cheated, and used a microwave. I don't even feel bad about cheating, I deserve it for putting up with hearing artillery drills rattling the windows for 20 years. :I

Only if you interpreted "Hillary....not so much" to mean she doesn't pander much. Which isn't what I was saying. I was saying that she isn't GOOD at it.

No, I interpreted you as saying that pandering is a bunch of things politicians do to get votes that aren't just spontaneous heartfelt emotions.

http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-crime/thief-lost-arm-deserved-attorney-article-1.2530763
Hey guys what do you think of this?

On the one hand, he had a gun and threatened to use it, and the car is a weapon too, is it not? It sounds like it might be justifiable self-defense, but IANAL so I could be completely wrong here (And presumably, since he's been charged, the district attorney thinks it isn't justifiable).

On the other hand, surely there must be some kind of stolen-$300-sneakers insurance so you don't need to try to run over a gun-toting thief in your car to get them back, and if at all possible, I'd personally want to avoid attacking the thief. Besides which, the cops are surely going to confiscate the sneakers as "evidence" anyways.

Although his lawyer did claim that he only hit the thief after the thief reached into his pocket, which would be consistent with justifiable self-defense, as far as I understand it. (From seeing cops gun down anyone who reaches towards their pockets or waist, or who happens to point a cellphone in the wrong direction, etc...)

The thing with the self-defence argument is that as soon as they're running away and you've had time to get into and manouvre your car, you're no longer under threat.

Taking a gun out of a holster or unslinging a rifle is, by definition, a threat to employ lethal force, and any motion that looks like you're doing so can provide the same justification. However, the video posted on the article doesn't provide enough information to say how justified this incident may be - if the driver could easily have turned and got away, that would eliminate the self-defense charge in non-stand-your-ground states. If there was no imminent turn, and the only way to flee was in a straight line away, that would be fuzzier - whether in a car or  on foot, going directly away from a firearm-armed attacker really isn't all that effective if they decide to shoot, as you are not that hard a target. If traffic or the road made it so a u-turn was the only way to escape, he's in the clear.

Thieves are fucking scum and deserve what they get. I prefer the world where you know trying to steal might cost you more than some ineffectual yelling by your disarmed, disaffected victims to one where we have the knowledge that you can probably rob someone without fear as long as you don't directly attack them or are in view of any cops.

Okay, but your takeaway (as evidenced by the clip you linked) is that pandering has no drawbacks. I would argue that pandering is always a gamble.

If you do it well, it can have a big upside (think Clinton playing the sax; Bush in his flight suit standing on a carrier).
If you do it in a mediocre fashion (as most pols do), it's kind of a zero-sum thing. Tweeting a picture of yourself wearing a sombrero on Cinco de Mayo day is lame, but most people aren't going to make a big deal of it.
If you do it in a tone-deaf fashion, it can have blowback. (e.g. wearing blackface to celebrate Black History Month; dressing up as a mariachi and getting blasted on tequila for Cinco de Mayo, when you're white; Dukakis riding in a tank)

Even the example in that WW episode (using your family as political props) is not without problems. Ted Cruz has been mocked for using his children as props. Obama has been mocked on occasion for his frequent references to his daughters. Trump...well, we know he'd like to bone Ivanka, so there's that. Hillary has been touting that she's a grandmother (ahem, an abuela), and the response has been tepid at best, and indignant at worst.

I think you are overstating the downside.  Sure pandering can produce gaffes.  So can high minded policy rhetoric.  Jeb Bush would probably prefer people mock him for showing off a gun then a lot of the media coverage he has been getting lately.  "Jeb Bush panders to gun owners" is a vastly preferable headline to "Jeb Bush tax plan increases the deficit" or anything beginning with the word "Trump".

Made even more delicious by the gun factory he visited being owned by FN (Belgian).
See, again....there's pandering to gun owners, and then there's pandering BADLY to gun owners.

Even the knuckledraggers over at FreeRepublic are laughing at him: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/3398005/posts.

FN is not only Belgian, it's actually 100% owned by the Waloon region. So they're socialists Belgians guns.

The thing with the self-defence argument is that as soon as they're running away and you've had time to get into and manouvre your car, you're no longer under threat.

But he could be following the thief while in the vehicle, and then as soon as the thief begins to pull out their gun again, he is once again, under threat.

Doesn't matter how you put yourself into that situation, whether its following a thief or a supposed thief wearing a hoodie.  It iwould even be moreso applicable in this sense, because he actually knows the person has a gun.

How do you feel about a starving person stealing food?

How do you feel about a shoeless beggar stealing shoes?

How do you feel about a resistance fighter stealing weapons?

How do you feel about a clerk stealing food tickets to feed hiding jews, gypsies and gays (in WW2)?

How do you feel about a parent robbing a bank to pay for a child's lifesaving treatment?

How do you feel about Robin Hood?

How do you feel about a heroin addict stealing something to pay for a shot, to prevent dying from withdrawal, in a country that has no free medical heroin or methadone?
