I thought Dr. Carson's Healthcare Idea made more sense than any other ideas i've heard about so far.

What is his healthcare plan? /toolazytolook

What I remember of it is that families would get tax-free health savings accounts to put money into and take out when they need it. Which would eliminate insurances and crap like that. Family members would share in depositing money and taking it when they need it. He was also going to talk about families that couldn't afford it, but then the buzzer went off and he politely stopped talking.

We already have those, and you even said the name of them: Health Savings Accounts, or HSAs. It isn't actually a good healthcare plan because it relies entirely upon luck to work: if you're lucky and don't actually get sick, you'll be fine. But if you get cancer and end up owing the hospital 200k, you're SOL. Which is precisely why insurance exists in the first place. Increasing your savings for healthcare by a couple percent by making it tax free isn't going to do anything for you when you're talking order of magnitude differences. An HSA isn't a replacement for insurance, it's almost more of an accounting trick to slightly reduce your taxes.

Yeah...HSAs are good for things like doctor visits, dental checkups, annual physicals, prescriptions, eyeglasses, etc. Stuff that you know is coming and is relatively modest.

Major surgery, cancer, extended illness, etc....that shit will blow through your whole HSA in a matter of minutes. One ambulance taking you to the emergency room, coupled with a few days' hospitalization and some medicine administered? You're done. That's a few thousand, minimum. Shit, even with insurance, that's probably several hundred dollars.

But for bigger groups, like families, it would be beneficial. It would also make other people keep you accountable for you health and stuff.

Not really. Not everyone in a family is going to be working, and even if they are, there are multiple people to look after from the same pool.

Social healthcare is the way to go. Not gonna happen though, insurance industry is a bit too entrenched to want to lose the income that 300 million fragile bags of flesh, blood and bone are pretty much obliged to pay them.

I mean, a family account would certainly alleviate some of the risk. But I think most families would still struggle with something like a prolonged illness that takes thousands and thousands of dollars over years, or multiple family members getting sick or injured at once.

Really, you would want to spread the liability out over huge numbers of people if you want everyone to be able to afford healthcare with some consistency. I wonder if anybody has a plan like that.

... yeah, it can help cover the routine preventative stuff, like what RK mentioned. And it is, indeed, good for taxes. Accountability wise it's... probably worse than a budget, or just extremely basic accounting, with significantly larger downsides (i.e. higher chance of mountains of medical debt and most of the people relying on it no longer having medical coverage).

Even (honestly, especially, since, again, just one major health issue can completely devour huge chunks of an HSA) a large family would seriously, seriously not want to rely on an HSA for emergency/catastrophic healthcare. It's good for yearly/predictable/small stuff, really good, but for an overall healthcare fund, it's barely (and questionably, really) better than just being straight up uninsured.

I suppose that's what my family has. It is called Medishare. You have to be a christian to be a part of it. It works really well, and the reason why is probably because they don't cover any medical conditions that come from out-of-wedlock sex, smoking, alcaholism, etc. So far, it has cost less per year, than whatever we had before it (I don't know what it was, I just turned 18 recently) but when I broke my arm, my parents seemed quite surprised how little out-of-pocket we had to pay.

And somehow this fits in some loop-hole in obamacare.

Hm, with the four latest polls, there seems to be a hint of a Bush and Kasich surge, but considering that the polls still look really chaotic to me and the fact that the polls were wrong on Trump and Cruz, just about anything could happen on Tuesday.

Also,  a funny thing I saw in the twitter sidebar of 538's liveblog last night:
"everyone talking about 'culling the GOP herd' after NH -- this just isn't righteous and shouldn't be permitted!

No Republican who has been in the race more than 3 months should be allowed to abort his candidacy for any reason -- even if he or she were gang-raped by the media and fellow candidates.

These fine Christians must be made to carry this thing the full term -- and then we'll see who or what pops out at the end. Deus vult !"

But for bigger groups, like families, it would be beneficial. It would also make other people keep you accountable for you health and stuff.

Sure, if healthcare was a good like clothes or chicken.  Healthcare purchasing doesn't remotely work that way.  There isn't a scrap of evidence from copays and deducatables to suggest they do.

If healthcare actually worked a way that the Carson plan makes sense there would be an even simpler plan that would remove even more distortions.  People would pay money and get services.  That's what you do in a market where people can be expected to make their own purchases effectively like homes or cars or plastic surgery.  And I'd love to see the model of "people pay money for things they want" reinforced for instance with the elimination of the home mortgage interest subsidy.  But healthcare is a place where you need subsidies because a working market doesn't spontaneously emerge.

I wonder if anybody has a plan like that.

That's what insurance is.

Hm, with the four latest polls, there seems to be a hint of a Bush and Kasich surge,

Looks like they lead Rubio in a poll!

Man I will feel so smug if Rubio drops out after all the prediction markets had him above 50%.

Man, if I was a gambler I would be selling the shit out of Rubio right now in futures markets.  I think there is at least a 50-50 chance he doesn't get 2nd place in New Hampshire.  If that happens his futures will drop way more then if he gets seconds.
