The Levantine-Persian rivalry has existed since before the Romans, it's pretty fucking neat how it's outlasted several religions, whole civilizations and entire peoples, with new people moving in and inheriting the old rivalry. Geography shapes a people after all.
Also the whole destroying your homeland thing wasn't really a thing any more than usual warfare, unless you count Mongolians and modern tech as improving the collateral. Honestly surprised there aren't more schisms in Islam, Christianity seems to have a schism every Tuesday
