You invested in GD?  That seems unwise somehow...

i'm gonna assume his parents put the money they were saving for his college fund into stocks because that was the responsible thing to do at the time, and then when he needed to go to college (perhaps in 2008, 2009, i don't remember how old he is), much of the money that had been counted on to pay those bills was not there

Seems like a reasonable thing to assume.  I'm going to speculate that they probably put most of that money in sometime before 2004.  If you are doing a college savings funds you dont do it all at the very end, you do it as you go along.  Assuming a reasonably diversified portfolio, investments made before 2004 probably made money even if you sold them in 2008.  It's true that you wouldn't realize the high value those stocks had risen to in 2007.  And even if you poured money into the stocks at the height of the bubble, you still would have gotten your bubble back if you waited for four years.

Blaming the stock market for the losses while ignoring the gains is a bad way to judge a market.

I just realized something. In the Hillary Clinton HQ there must be a guy whose job is to watch of the GOP candidate says stupid shit and carefully catalog it for future attack ads. I want that job.

They say stupid shit ALL of the time, it is silly season you know, the real challenge is finding the useful gems.

They need more people double checking her and stopping her before she says stupid shit.

All I know is that if clinton was half the nascent demon god/robot people seem to enjoy portraying her as, I'd be a lot more enthusiastic over the prospect of voting for her. The political scene would be hella' more interesting if getter rays rolled up into that shit.

E: Though now I have this amazing mental image of the first (and last) presidential debate of this cycle starting and ending with hilary stepping on stage, tearing open her shirt with a scream of "GEEEETTTAAAA BEEEEEEAAAAMMMM",* and reducing her opponent to an irradiated ashen smear on the ground. Betcha' it'd win points like goddamn with the warhawk parts of the polity.

*Rough visual reference. Don't ask where the dragon robot comes from in the above proposed scenario. It was always there.

you can still fail to meet a budget in a way that screws you over even if you had a net gain, if your contributions to the portfolio were made taking into account the average rate of growth

unlike economists, most people have bills that need paying immediately, and so cannot treat their money as an abstract resource to be managed for the greatest long-term payoff - if you've got tuition to pay, you cash out what you need, even at a loss, because the alternative is crippling debt

and waiting four years to go to college isn't necessarily a great idea, given all the wages you'll be missing out on (though i'm too lazy to do the math), not to mention all the social pressures and crap

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

This is true, this is true.  It just doesn't mean that the stock market took money away.

Wasn't sure if this is a good place for it, but Iran has released some American prisoners as part of a swap agreement. For our part the USA has released 7 Iranians arrested for exporting things to Iran, and dropped charges against another 14. Details abound on the ones Iran released, but I'm still looking to see who the USA swapped. Republicans have, predictably, called Obama weak and a coward and all other sorts of noise, but I for one am happy to see further effort to normalize (if not exactly repair) relations with them.

Edit: Here they are.
