Well, you could defend it by saying that the State Dep. is in the process of bringing peace to Syria. They might not succeed, but they try.

If they had said they were bringing war to Syria, you all would be congratulating them for going above and beyond the call of duty.

I'd be saying it's an absolutely terrible idea, and looking into getting back into uniform.

There's certainly arguments to be made that it'd be a perfectly reasonable thing to do. vov

So hey, looks like pataki dropped/is dropping. I can only assume this will make him slightly more relevant to the presidential race :V

Tell me, as the one soldier I know of on Bay12: Do you support a Western intervention in Syria? If yes, what sort of intervention? And would you be fine with being sent there to serve?

Yep, Pataki is dropping out. He hasn't officially dropped out just yet, but he's signalling that he's going to.

Hell no; standard/current assassination and degradation plan; I'd have to go find a recruiter and get my stripes back first, but I'd call him pretty quickly, assuming it ends up being a proper intervention.

Follow-up question: Why would you join back in even though you're opposed to intervention? I'm asking honestly - I come from a rather anti-mlitaristic background, and trying to understand the 'military way of thinking' (no idea about the proper term) is rather important to me.

Any tanker worth his replacement parts is going to say that he's the best, and I'm no different. In all honesty though, I was damn good. Me being around could very well keep a few kids from dying, and that'd be reason enough. I certainly wouldn't easily forgive myself for missing out on a war when I'm still competent (hell, I still have my own self-doubts about Iraq, and I enlisted before I was out of High School). As a final consideration, the money and experience are both reasonably attractive things to me.

So it's essentially an obligation to your comrades, not to your country or some abstract ideal? Then I still wonder about the 'missing out' bit - what do you feel would you be missing out on? Most people try to get and stay out of war zones instead of trying to get into one...

Obligation to my comrades and obligation to my own pride, I'd say. There's some value to abstract ideals and to the country, but they wouldn't be served in our intervention scenario. Syria isn't going to be fixed with American tanks and blood. If we're talking something like carving out a Kurdish nation state, or anything like a competent Abraham Lincoln Brigade, I'd be even more willing to put my ass on the line for little pay.

I'd be missing out on a war. I'm not sure if I could effectively explain it, but it's something that's gone once it's gone, something I was good at, that does make a difference (once again, at a platoon or company level, nothing higher than that), and that pays well. Lots of people avoid wars, but the minority is pretty large too, just look at all the kids who lied about their ages to get into WW2.
