Not that the average voter will look twice at this, even if they remember any of the details of the case 2 years ago, and even if they actually heard anything beyond the rabid shouting of the right wing media and a few notable conservatives.... *Cough*Rubio*Cough*

But Carson shows his ignorance again: https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20151105/06400332726/is-stomp-jesus-case-really-good-example-extreme-political-bias-college-campuses.shtml

Speaking Carson...this may be the first time I've heard a candidate try to use their violent past as a selling point. I know it's supposed to underscore how religion saved him but.....vociferously defending that you once tried to stab a dude as a key part of why you should be president just seems completely backasswards. Personally, I don't care how much religion you got, I don't think that kind of willingness to do violence ever really goes away.

Not all that far removed from all the ex-military Presidents who spend their time implying that they've done it all, they'll personally fucking kill every single enemy of the United States and laugh as they make angels in the soup of blood and gore.

Serving in combat, in any way, is quite a bit different than what basically amounts to claims of being a mugger.

Put it another way. It's like an ex-crack addict who found Jesus and is running for president strenuously defending just how much crack they smoked back in the day. It's like...it isn't really doing you the favor you think it is.

No ex-military president in the modern era has bragged about killing.  Eisenhower presented himself as a man of peace, pretty ironically for one of the few five star generals in US history.  Kennedy didn't brag about the attacks he made on Japanese shipping, he was lionized for the time he saved a mans life by dragging him through the ocean by his teeth.  None of the presidents after that had notable military service.

Yeah, I dunno....there's qualitatively something different between "I'm a decorated military commander who has defended our great nation on the battlefield" and "I totally tried to stab a dude when I was 14".

Generals/war heroes who run for office aren't emphasizing the violence of their actions (for one, staff officers rarely see combat) but the leadership/character qualities of being a commander.

I'm not really that weirded out by Carson's admission though, it's not that different from Obama admitting that he did weed and "a little blow" in his youth. It's considered inspirational to say "Man, I used to be kinda fucked up, but look at me now!" Because all the fucked-up people out there will identify and have a weird inner monologue of "Hey, if he becomes President, then it means maybe *I* could be President someday!"

I believe it helps that, as far as I'm aware, his whole past as a "thug" seems to be made up?

That's the question. Reporters can't find anyone who recalls Carson like that as a youth, and people he mentioned in his book (using pseudonyms which only now has he said are pseudonyms) can't be found and he won't identify them to the media.

And now, he's admiting that he has lied about a West Point scholarship. If he wasn't disqualified before, he is now, especially with the fact that nobody can seem to corobborate his violent past. If he lied about that part of his past (if he exaggerated a bit, okay, but he outright lied), then what else about his past isn't true.

Though theres that bit with his mother, but his mother is in hospice with Alzheimers and his brother couldn't be reached by CNN.

It seems to me like Carson needs to always be the best.  Can't be a doctor, has to be a brain surgeon.  Can't be a politician, needs to be president.  Can't join the military, needs to be a scholarship case to West Point.

The fact that his inspirational personal story hinges on some "facts" that maybe didn't occur the way he describes them shouldn't be a hindrance to any voters except you reality-obsesssed liberals.

I never let that kind of fact-fetish get in my way when I overcame my humble beginnings to arm-wrestle Adolf Hitler into submission 30 years before being born. That's an inspirational story that shows the power of unborn (and even unconceived) fetuses.

With God, all things are possible. Even chronological paradoxes.
