Bah...the debates should become part of the vetting and winnowing process. We need a President who can stand up to Putin, not sit down in a comfy chair.

I say we make them run on treadmills and being flogged while being peppered with questions. And arrows.

I swear this all for the good of the country, and not my own personal desire to see them suffer. Plus, ratings!

Just dump them all on an island somewhere in the pacific and make them do silly challenges that have nothing to do with surviving on an island or being president. The encourage them to have sex with each other. That should satisfy the media's desire for ratings. Although we should probably get a few more female candidates if we don't want to run into any problems with their positions on 'one man one woman'.

Or we could not get more women and watch as Carly Fiorina becomes queen of the island with her wiles.  It would give Hillary a chance to settle the score with Bill too.

Hey, as long as none of them are certified to officiate over marriages or to sign marriage licenses, it's fine. They can't get married anyway.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

I thought we already tried that, or its nearest East-coast equivalent two centuries ago.  Turns out that dumping them in a mosquito-ridden swamp didn't work out, because the mosquitoes had professional courtesy.

Election Day is tomorrow! I know it's uncool to talk about the 2015 elections, but I hope you're voting if you've got something to vote on.

In Kentucky we're electing a new governor. One of the main issues this election is Obamacare, as the choice of governor will likely determine whether we remain one of the biggest success stories or if we become another state where the government sabotages the system to prove it won't work. And the two candidates are polling pretty evenly, so who knows what'll happen.

My favorite condition was "candidates are not allowed to address each other."

They might as well just drop the pretense that this is a debate. The RNC wants a marketing platform under their control, little else. And sadly I'm guessing the networks will go for it since, to them, at the end of the day it's all ad revenue anyways.

Oh well. I stopped watching the debates years ago.

They actually said they can't address each other? Wow... At least the other side is actually worse. The DNC has limited it down to 6 debates and barred any of the candidates from taking part in any non-DNC-sanctioned debates or else they lose access to the DNC debates.

Here in Ohio we have to hope that the bill banning direct democracy doesn't pass.As an effort to block marijuana legalization, the state Congress put an amendment on the ballot allowing any ballot initiative that "unduly favors any particular individual or group" (as the legalization initiative restricts growth sites to a set initial number, and thus is labeled by opponents as a monopoly) to be summarily rejected by the officials in charge of accepting initiatives (who currently are responsible for verifying signatures and formalizing the ballot language). As nearly any initiative can be said to unduly favor a particular group, this would mean that only initiatives that align with the ruling party's agendas would have any chance of going on the ballot. This is particularly important in a purple state like Ohio, which has a history of using ballot initiatives to tell elected officials to fuck off.

Anyone voting in Ohio should vote NO on issue 2 regardless of your position on marijuana legalization (which is controlled by issue 3).

Don't seem to have anything to vote on, heh. Only 2015 ones I can find in florida are a couple of municipal elections for places I'm not at...

Some people came around campus the other day trying to convince people to vote yes on 2, claiming that it was "basically issue 3 without the monopoly clause." They were old enough to be students, but when I asked them what their majors were they told me they didn't go here.

Which was pretty shitty of them, and more than a little sketchy, but I didn't know enough to dispute it at the time. I signed up for their newsletter anyway.

Issue 2 doesn't legalize marijuana at all, and specifically states that "if this passes, marijuana will not be made legal". The official ballot language:

Quote
Issue 2
Anti-monopoly amendment; protects the initiative process from being used for personal economic
benefit
Proposed Constitutional Amendment
Proposed by Joint Resolution of the General Assembly
Proposing to amend Section 1e of Article II of the Constitution of the State of Ohio.
A majority yes vote is necessary for the amendment to pass.

The proposed amendment would:
• Prohibit any petitioner from using the Ohio Constitution to grant a monopoly, oligopoly, or cartel
for their exclusive financial benefit or to establish a preferential tax status.

• Prohibit any petitioner from using the Ohio Constitution to grant a commercial interest, right, or
license that is not available to similarly situated persons or nonpublic entities.

• Require the bipartisan Ohio Ballot Board to determine if a proposed constitutional amendment
violates the prohibitions above, and if it does, present two separate ballot questions to voters.
Both ballot questions must receive a majority yes vote before the proposed amendment could take
effect.

• Prohibit from taking effect any proposed constitutional amendment appearing on the November 3,
2015 General Election ballot that creates a monopoly, oligopoly, or cartel for the sale, distribution,
or other use of any federal Schedule I controlled substance.

• The Ohio Supreme Court has original, exclusive jurisdiction in any action related to the proposal.

If passed, the amendment will become effective immediately.

This has been revised since I last read it, originally point 3 allowed a summary veto.

Wont the courts prevent the government from abusing 2?  I mean it seems to me like 2 has really obvious logic to it, 3 is a horrible, no good very bad precedent to set.  You lobby the government to give you a cartel and enforce your cartel with the police, then profit handsomely off it.  I'm 110% behind the idea of the government breaking up such cartels.

I'm from Ohio!

I dunno man.  The explanation I heard was that the monopoly is there to help mature the market and regulations and that there were limitations built into the amendment, but looking around I can't find those limitations.  Now I'm wondering if I wasn't lied to.

If it's just an eternal monopoly on production then yeah, I'm not a fan of it.
