The way our military uses these terms

I heard a military spokesman on NPR pretty soon after I first heard about this story, saying that the attack on the hospital was a mistake, not justified.

Say, what IS NPR saying about this?  They generally have decent info but I haven't had time to listen.

And yeah, this should be spun off to its own thread.

But when did this become the American Intervention thread? It seems like every time I come here it's about war. Why don't we have an intervention, so it doesn't infect the regular politics thread? Don't we, in fact, have a thread such as that?
If we do, I didn't notice it. Closest I can recall would be the ISIS thread, which I don't think generalized beyond that.

... also, hate to tell you, but war is part of the states' regular politics. It's constantly part of the rhetoric, it's steadily an issue both for the presidential candidates and others, and we haven't stopped bloody intervening since before anyone here was born. I can't really think of a better place than the ameripol thread to talk about the military side of american politics, which is a major bloody part of our country's political landscape.

E: Though the thought did occur to me it might not be as big a deal in your area, misk. Iirc you're up north, where there's comparatively less military involvement in the general population. For those of us in areas where the larger chunk of recruitment is going on, it's probably notably more prevalent.

Haven't we been getting militarily involved in other peoples politics and other stuff since the nation's birth? It was mostly Europe that we wanted absolutely nothing to do with militarily.

Not really. Up until the post-Civil-war era, the US's military activities were mostly devoted to the Indian Wars, with a few "Stop attacking our ships" wars with France, England, and the Barbary Coast Pirates. The only real intervention (apart from the anti-colonial "keep the fuck out of our hemisphere" Monroe Doctrine) in the early 19th century was Mexico.

I'm so glad that liberals and conservatives could finally agree to help corporations, which are too often left without a voice in congress.

There should be an office and a position in US politics whose jobs are basically to aggregate the contents of letters sent in and use them as an indicator on the voice of people.

I think this is sctually supposed to be a part of what senators do, but like 99% are too busy on the golf course with Smokey Slim and Ronald McDonald

No actually people just don't typically write them letters. Then bitch about how their congressman doesn't really care what they think, seemingly without realizing that they need to make the effort to actually inform the man of what they think. The only people who do are old people and people who are highly politically active, which filters out most of the moderate views in certain areas.

It's a bit hilarious actually. But it makes sense. Representatives does crazy things because crazy people are the only ones they hear from, and the only ones who actually bother to cast their vote.

So we finally get to see if the Democratic debate can match the GOP for sheer entertainment value (note: Unless Joe Biden shows up shirtless and clutching a fifth of rye whiskey while riding on a white tiger that he stole from Siegfried and Roy, it won't).

And for many viewers, it may be the first time that they're aware that anyone other than Clinton and Sanders are running for President. A strong showing by one of the others may actually push their poll numbers up to where they y'know...register in the polls. 3% even!

One of the bigger questions is whether Sanders takes the high road or starts lobbing ad hominem attacks against Clinton. She's a ripe target for attacks on "trustworthiness" and character, but throwing those bombs may also turn off a fair chunk of Sanders' supporters.

Clinton's job, on other hand, isn't to separate herself from the pack or beat down rivals, but to give people a reason to vote for her other than being the heir-apparent. If she's smart, she'll also take the high road, ignore chances to counterpunch Sanders and focus on delivering her own platform and vision.

Sanders has said that he isn't going to go negative on Clinton and wants it to be a contest of ideas rather than personality (don't we all though?), so....

And yeah, the others besides Clinton and Sanders are desperate for name recognition and some climb in the polls. We should have had more democratic debates IMO.

So you're saying even odds it'll be entertaining?
