There's too much gun violence in classrooms, so we need to take the obvious first step: Removing students from classrooms. I propose we teach them in shooting ranges and gun stores.
The safest place imaginable! Nothing can possibly go wrong with kids on a firing range.
Right? So yeah...apparently McCarthy was getting nixed by the hardcore rightists in the GOP, not the least over this comment to Fox News last week:
"Everybody thought Hillary Clinton was unbeatable, right? But we put together a Benghazi special committee, a select committee, what are her numbers today? Her numbers are dropping, why? Because she's untrustable. But no one would have known any of that had happened."
So yeah, they're mad at him for basically admitting that the Benghazi thing is about tanking Hillary's poll numbers. What good is a Speaker of the House if he can't lie through his teeth?
The notion was that they had enough votes to win the nomination within the GOP side of the House, but not enough to win in the full House (knowing that Democrats will likely vote a party line against any Republican nominee for Speaker.) Thus, John Boehner has announced he will remain in the Speakership until a suitable replacement is found.
This could actually be an incredibly shrewd political move by Boehner. Now he gets to run the House without threats of an ouster from the Tea Party, and he can rely on factional infighting to delay support coalescing around any one candidate for some time, or forcing the GOP to pick a caretaker moderate candidate (well, moderate in this case meaning not-frothing-at-the-mouth) that's inoffensive enough to garner sufficient support. If it turns out that he planned this all along, my respect for Mr. Orange will go up tremendously.
