To be fair, if they really wanted to be funny, they'd have done Walter Mondale, the only person to lose elections in all 50 states. :P

Washington wouldn't, Grant couldn't, and Roosevelt shouldn't. I'm against a third term.

What do you mean couldn't? Running for a third term wasn't outlawed until Roosevelt died.

Edit: Well, Grant did try to.

Grant tried and failed to win a third term in 1876.

He attempted again in 1880 though.

I want to get off of Mr. Boehner's wild ride.

Quote
The last time it took multiple ballots to elect a speaker was 1923, when it took nine, and in the 19th century it took as long as two months for the House to agree on a leader. This year, the House just doesn’t have that kind of time. Congress must lift the debt limit to avoid a first-ever default within a week of the scheduled election for speaker, according to the Treasury Department, and it must pass another spending bill by December 11 to prevent a government shutdown.

I'm going to add a filter to my browser to replace "shutdown" with "shitstorm."

Does it bother anyone else that procedural conflicts in the fossilized wing of the US legislature alone could cause so much trouble?

Hopefully the entire federal government will collapse and when the New California Republic rises from the ashes we'll take some time to make a functional legislative body.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.
