The kids pretty regularly see about as much or more skin at the beach/pool/etc. or on TV (we'll not mention the internet, or what goes on on school internet connections), and with considerably less educational merit involved. Bonus points in that the illustration is less violent than the more common example (eats, shoots and leaves).

Well, to be fair, I can see their point. Teenagers see a lot worse then that, yes, but that still might not be appropriate for school.

Also, you need to remember that some parents have trouble thinking of their kids as teenagers, not babies. I know, I know, but really.

This is now doubly confusing to me, just coming back from Europe, and general European attitudes about sex and nudity vs. violence and guns. It's pretty much the exact opposite. American culture comes off as both really repressed and homicidal.

Important note, but just because you use that as an example doesn't necessarily mean you use the graphics along with it. That was literally given as an example in one of my high school english classes, needless to say all that went on the board was the words, so I wouldn't think it would be a particularly gregarious example at the time. (Middle school you might be better off with a different example though ).
