Should a distinction be made between the more media outrage side of the generation and the upper-middle student with lots of disposable income? Because one is far more likely to be of greater value at generating publicity or helping with PR with social media capital and free hours whilst the latter is the cash cow to be milked; see EA using the former for defence and Apple for the latter

One should be made, yes. One generates the monies, the other generates the hype. Still, seems like an awfully byzantine way to cynically capitalize on political movements in the county. You'd think if this were more successful we'd be seeing it more than we have now, although, trends be trending and shit.

Guy Fawkes masks are the immediate precursor to this. Though then again, though it started with a bunch of trolls and lols it ended with what we'd anachronistically call the tumblr gen.
I think the social media is the key here; it's easy to generate "outrage" on twitter or petitions that take very little effort to appear far more imposing than they are. And the market capitalizing on this new market of hype and dollar has coincided with the rise of the kony2012 activism. I.e. people getting ripped and mugged of monies based off of emotional appeals that overpower reason. In the short amount of time where outrage flows, inhibitions on wallets follow.

You know, I'm not that big on the whole replacing "illegal immigrant" with "undocumented resident" shtick, but calling people "illegals" like that is just terrible rhetoric.
