Sure, some of his positions (Native Americans in particular) were colored by the racism of his time and would make him a problematic candidate today. Actually, it seems to be mostly Native Americans and other 'indengenes' that he was racist against. Plus really imperialist.

Yes he had his faults, but who doesn't.

Eisenhower was pretty much okay.

Ford was, um, sort of around neutral?

Also, you'd have to do research on those who were also candidates for each election to really say that for sure. Maybe there were some decent candidates (for their timeperiod), they just weren't the ones who ended up getting elected.

Herbert Hoover was an excellent candidate.  Wendell Wilkie was pretty close to FDR, a little less racist and a little more isolationist.

That's one big flaw. It certainly outweighed any positives he brought to America, from a utilitarian standpoint.

I was evaluating Hoover as a candidate.  As a candidate his biggest flaw was not being correct about circumstances that had never been seen before.  Afterwards we can see it's a situation that 2 out of 43 presidents have faced.  So the downside with Hoover is that %2.5 of the time he is unfit.  But what about the other %97.5?  Excellent administrator, history of fostering cooperation, hardworking, idealistic; all in all a lot better then most.

Also, I wonder if any of the Republican candidates will attempt to reverse the progress with the new relationship that we are having with Cuba? I'm not against the new relationship, heck, I welcome it, I'm just wondering since the Republicans are like 'Roll back everything Obama did!!!!!1!11!!!!11!1'. Well, not quite everything, but I think you guys know what I mean in general.
