Well, it'd be interesting to see how he got there. How was he radicalized? Who pushed him to terrorism? There are many issue that are probably more interesting and fruitful than gun control.

If a person in that church had pulled out a gun and shot him, I'm almost certain the right wing would implode in a singularity of hypocrisy (... ok, a more dense one, anyway).

Even if they were legally allowed to have guns in that church, I doubt anyone there would have any. It's South Carolina, in America. Black people get shot for cops thinking they MIGHT have a gun, let alone actually having one.

Except that if you bother to read the article, it doesn't look like the shooter in that instance had designs on mass killing. Arguments that escalate into single-target shootings happen ALL THE DAMN TIME. Literally, dozens of times each day in the US. And sometimes the shooter is then killed by cops (even off-duty ones).

It isn't really clear what the shooter's long term goals were, though, or what they would have done if they weren't stopped. Regardless, I only thought of that particular incident because it actually involved a church. For every mass shooting in the US, it isn't too hard to find a matching incident of a potential shooting pre-emptively stopped by a person with a gun, or a mass shooting in a country with "safer" gun laws.

Weirdly, the debate coming out of all this now seems to be shifting to whether SC should take down the Confederate flag from the Governor's mansion. (As if somehow, the flag is the guilty party here and taking it down will prevent future attacks).

Most of the GOP candidates have either supported taking it down (Jeb Bush) or letting the state decide (pretty much everyone else). But Lindsey Graham, himself a South Cackalackian, is defending it with a zeal that would have made Jeff Davis proud. Graham stated that "the flag is part of who we are". Which could be interpreted to say that racism is core to South Carolinian identity. So thanks for clearing that up, Linds.

Y'know, I'm a proud Southerner with ancestors who fought and died for the CSA in the War Between the States. When I was growing up, when kids would play imaginary shooting games, we didn't play cops-and-robbers, or cowboys-and-indians. We played Blue-And-Grey. And EVERYONE wanted to be Grey, including me.

But when the Stars and Bars is associated with horrendous incidents like this, it makes me want to see it taken down, put in a museum and left there to fade into history as it should have all along.

It's a moot point, as the impending systematic destruction of all South Carolinian culture will leave us with a population that couldn't identify a one of those flags (not actually used by the CSA, by the way) if they tried.
