Chomsky's tendency to support "left-wing" causes without analysis unfortunately extends beyond the Khmer Rouge, he also has spoken out in favor of the Chinese system and seems to fall for the "unconditionally anti-Israel pro-Palestine" line of thought (I'll grant that he's also spoken for binational peace between Israelis and Palestinians, but a little bit of knowledge is dangerous and all that). Older members of the US left often have a hard-on for exotic genocidal revolutionaries. I think it comes from an inflamed contrarianism.

The elevated toxin samples from blood and urine were all handled by the same lab the State Department based their claims on, a toxicology lab at the University of Minnesota which they contracted for the tests. No other lab around the world was ever able to replicate the results. But, reading more, i think this could have been due to contamination at the lab in question. Since all the toxins found in the samples were also toxins that the particular lab used for research.

So, accidental contanimation by the testing lab? Of course, the bias is then in taking this one lab with shitty controls as the gold standard, and dismissing contradictory evidence from hundreds of other labs both elsewhere in the USA and worldwide. It sort of seems unlikely that only this one lab was able to detect anything, and that it just happened to solely consist of the same of chemicals the lab had on site in abundance.

... it would be mildly pleasing if both chomsky and more or less irrelevant (to current politics) history would both bugger off for another thread.

Well yeah, but most of these topics don't really have somewhere to put them. We don't need a chomsky thread and there's no american history thread, or american politics thread in general that's not related to elections.

Chomsky is very good at what he does.

What he does is anti-US, anti-free market propaganda.

And that's all I've got to say about that.

I read a couple Chomsky books, and I don't remember any claims of a conspiracy. Widespread bias, yeah, but no conspiracy.

Isn't this still the general American politics thread? I've seen people post non-election stuff a couple times.

I'd say this is still the American politics megathread. At least until the op says otherwise.

I think general US politics is fine in here for the time being, since the election season is still on a low simmer.

Well... yeah. But maybe not politics from decades ago? Or at least only inasmuch as there some significant connection between back then and now. Not political history thread, y'know? Unless FJ changes the title, anyway.

OP checking in here. Pretty much any US political discussion, or reasonable tangents thereto, is fine. The alternative this far from the election is thread death, and there's no reason to have competing US politics threads.

I'm additionally going to go on record as saying that my one request for a thread split (the one about three weeks ago about education) was ill-thought out and that I'm not going to do that again unless other thread commenters ask for it.
