Actually, it wouldn't be surprising if you consider the terrain, you know how like frumple has said there are no proper hills in Florida and how flat the Carolina coast is? That part of Mexico is as hilly and mountainous and not-flat as the California coast, heck, on the wiki page for Manzanillo, you can see hills in the background. So, hitting that coastline is like hitting a wall for a hurricane.
