That California segue was quite nice.

Is Sanders auditioning to be Clintons VP? He's certainly buddying up to her somewhat.

Now onto the marjuana issue.

Nah, although the other three might be.  Sanders just is running on the issues he cares about and likes it when other politicians support those positions.

Actually, a Clinton/Sanders ticket sounds like it would be quite a force.

Sounds like a bad idea for the same reason a Obama/Clinton ticket would have been.

Well, looks like O'Malley has that bronze medal on lockdown.

What the hell is a "major country"?  Like is China not a major country?  Is India?

I think O'Malley should be more ambitious about his electric grid proposal, by 2030 maybe instead of 2050.

Anyhow, Sanders and Clinton both did well I think. Chaffee probably sunk himself, not enough information IMO on Webb and O'Malley.

35 years to completely renewable seems pretty ambitious to me.  It basically means that by the end of his presidency, fossil fuel power plant construction would be banned.

CNN analyst just declared Webb and Chaffee campaigns DOA in the first take after the debates.  Given that media feedback loops matter in primaries that could be very true.

Actually, the analyst said that he (or she, don't know who was talking) would be surprised if O'Malley and Webb were around for much longer, candidacy wise. I don't know if all three were mentioned or just Webb and Chaffee, but yeah, I agree that Chaffee pretty much shot himself in the foot early on.

Also, what did you mean earlier that Webb should take public speaking lessions?

Webb has a habit of hemming and hawing and saying "um" even when delivering a rehearsed speech and he was true to form in his opening remarks.  That's not the sort of thing you'd expect from a man running to be vice president of the united states.

I don't really know what Webb is going for here -- he has to know he's not going to be the nominee. None of the other candidates would pick him for VP, either. There's a lot to be said for publicity, but  there just isn't any benefit to positioning yourself a couple feet to the right of your opponents in this party. As crazy as it sounds, he might actually do better as an independent.

Chafee...didn't do so good.

Sanders, Clinton and O'Malley all did just fine. Bernie could've stood to calm down a bit, and it would've been nice if he went a bit out of his comfort zone more often. I'd like to see a supercut of all the times he's said 'millionaires and billionaires' over the course of his campaign. Hillary was, well, Hillary. Composed and prepared, definitely. O'Malley did very well for his poll numbers, and I could see him as VP if that's what Clinton or Sanders opt for.

All in all, a refreshing showing of sanity. Keeping up with politics in this country can be eminently depressing, so it's nice to see that not every politician is criminally insane. CNN definitely went overboard with the stupid intros, though. It's not a goddamn boxing match (though Jim Webb got a little threatening toward the end with his "I killed a man" talk  :P). Gotta get those viewers hooked, I guess.

It seems CNN realized a little too late that this debate was gonna actually be substantive rather than- whatever the PC term is for what the GOP debate was. Hence the dumb "last time on Game of Thrones" intro to spice things up.

I think Webb is trying to cast himself as representative of the last vestiges of moderate-conservative Southern democrats- which is a weird anachronism, because the minority vote is more important to Democrats in the south than ever, and Webb has a legacy of putting his foot squarely in his mouth on racial issues during his tenure as governor (and just seems kind of tone-deaf in general; he didn't seem to notice he was disagreeing with every candidate, including a former liberal republican, on most issues). If you ask me, he's aiming for VP, but is unlikely to get it because his (potential) strength with moderate white democrats doesn't shore up a weakness of Clinton or Sanders, and it's far from realized even if it did. In a sense, he seems like a kind of John Kasich analogue - a moderate, even oppositional figure at odds with the dominant current of his party, who may or may not be there to boost CNN's ratings amongst the ideologically uncomitted.

Sanders continues to depress me by being genuine enough to arouse my leftist passions but far too blunt to ever be generally electable; eventually, his socialist identification (admirable as it may be) is going to catch up with him. I speculate he and Clinton will orbit each other for awhile - before a fairly amicable concession when the left of the party isn't enough to keep him going any longer. He won't be veep for loads of good reasons, but he might end up with a cabinet post (state would be weird and inappropriate for his experience- labor, maybe?).

Clinton did a good job of playing the blandly competent stateswoman, which unfortunately probably isn't what she was going for (or needed). Her campaign needs pizazz, and she's wringing the "first plausible female candidate" sponge mighty dry for this early in the race. Nonetheless, I still think she has the best odds to A. win the nomination and B. smoothly overcome whichever Republican manages to crawl out of the centrifuge.

Well, the social media post-mortems seem to be giving the debate to Sanders by a pretty big margin. Be interesting to see how that translates to poll numbers now.

EDIT: heh...meanwhile, the assorted punditry are gushing over Clinton. Interesting illustration of the generational gap.
