People will dig deeper then! Though you would start needing some serious mining equipment 300 feet belowground. Or they could do it manually with picks.
There was a news article a few years ago about the discovery of somewhat sophisticated tunnel under the border- complete with minecart tracks. I believe the cartels were using it to smuggle drugs rather than people, but yeah, the point stands.

In the year 2011 the Smugglers of Drugs of The Mexican Cartel founded Bordercrossed.
In the year 2012 John McDEAAgent began scouting around Bordercrossed.
In the early spring of 2012 Juan McDEAMole became captain of the guard of Bordercrossed.
In the year 2012 the Smugglers of Drugs of The Mexican Cartel finished construction of The Secretive Path connecting Bordercrossed and Drugreceived.
In the early winter of 2014 the Agency of Drug Enforcement defeated the Distributors of Cocaine of The Mexican Cartel and pillaged Drugreceived.
In the late winter of 2014 the Agency of Drug Enforcement defeated the Smugglers of Drugs of The Mexican Cartel and pillaged Bordercrossed.

Bauglier was talking about how the NSA invariably will snoop on copyrighted material as part of their data collecting activities, so technically they're illegally downloading peoples materials for private use.

The general excuse would be "but they're law enforcement so the laws don't apply to them". Which you have to admit is sort of paradoxical.
Yeah, that was the idea. Moreover, I'd wager there's a fair bit of stuff in what they're actually interested in harvesting that might pass the originality requirements. Manifestos, lengthy letters, that sort of thing. Presumably none are registered, but y'know.

Most likely the exemption is implicit in their having been authorized to perform their duties, but I'd be interested to know if that actually flies or if there's a more explicit sort of thing anywhere. It's the sort of creative horseshit that I want to see a case about mostly >______________>

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Well, on one video there's leaked cop car footage of some state troopers going through a woman's belongings at a check point -  they found it suspicious that she knew her constitutional rights and had books on legal issues. Why else would you need to know your legal rights and the constitution if you weren't up to something?

For one book they want to confiscate, an officers clearly comments "I hope this book is on the ban list, because it looks like an interesting read".

No, that kind of thing happens all over. We do live in a police state, after all...

You're trolling. America may be far (FAAAR) from perfect, but it's hardly a police state.

No, I'm quite serious. It's not very evident unless you happen to be the wrong sort of person, or just in the wrong place at the wrong time, but it can get pretty nasty.

Police state is a term with a specific meaning, and "cops going haywire" isn't it.

Police states sure ain't what they used to be. Neither are most things I guess: even moderates get to be socialists,  fascists, anarchists, etc. these days.

I joke, of course. Words haven't meant anything specific to anyone but academics since language was invented.

There's a difference between being alleged to be an [X]ist, and actually being an [X]ist. Words have definite meanings, humans just don't like to admit it.

What term would you prefer, then?

A place with little to no control over their police force? No need to shoehorn a buzzword onto everything.
